Wonder if anyone could help with a problem a friend of mine has with his Chimaera 500.

Whenever he gets back from a fastish longish drive, the whole back end of the car is covered in a petrol like oily substance obviously from the exhausts.

Thanks.

When he checks the engine oil level does it use more than 1 litre every 1,000 miles?

Does he carry a spare can of anything in the boot?

Is this 20 questions? If so you've had three.

Well, it's either oil or petrol or coolant presumably?

(Unless it's spillage from the boot, or exhaust matter from passenger pants after exhuberant driving)

If it's that noticaeable it's presumably oil, hence the consumption question.

Definately nothing leaking from boot, but has got that rainbowy oily appearance all over the back end. How much oil does it have to use before he needs to worry? I don't know too much about the Rover engines

So he should start worrying then, I told him he should have bought a Cerb!

I had a Chimaera with a similar problem. It had been fitted with the wrong rings at manufacture.

He's only had it a couple of months so hopefully Fernies will sort it out for him. I've always found them quite helpful.

Oil seals...........engine/gearbox/rear axle........check your levels and since he says it doesn't use "oil" presume all he's done is pull his dip-stick !!

Gearbox will be thin-ist and probably red, rear axle, smelly and not red !!

You gotta ger under and have a look.

Mine has always run quite rich and the back of the car gets covered in a dark tacky residue as a result. In my case it's petrol not oil.

My 500 uses a bit more oil than my old 400 but that was only to be expected.

No leaks but I never get an oily film on the back of the car?

A bloke walks into a solicitor's office and asks
"How much do you charge?"
The solicitor replies
"£300 for three questions"
So the bloke says
"That's expensive, isn't it"
The solicitor replies
"Yes, now what's your third question"
