I've been having some issues lately with the reliability of the courier company I use to ship gearboxes. Basically I need them picked up same/next day then delivered to me the day after that. I can then rebuild them and send them back a day later. This means any box that gets collected Monday or Tuesday gets back to the customer before the weekend. This hasn't been happening lately.

Anyone have any recommendations?

I've found The Pallet Network to be reliable for next day deliveries. Get yourself an account with the local TPN associated carrier and they will arrange collections from all over the country.

Obviously, collections and deliveries to some parts is of Northern Scotland will be a two days service.

I've no complaints with Palletline, prices very reasonable for our ad-hoc volumes, but it depends on the depot.
£25-45 to send 1 full pallet, depending on the zone.
The further the area from the depot, the higher the charge.

We don't compete with pallet line, but can offer same and next day.

I have previously used http://www.pallet2ship.co.uk/ and found them good.

I would also check with http://www.ningbodistribution.co.uk/ , think he might be a PH'r
