apparently they've been involved in discussions regarding the post-2021 regulation changes. If so will they be any good?

F1 needs Porsche more than Porsche needs F1.

F1 better make sure they get the regulations right to attract Porsche back into F1.

Porsche have had little to no involvement in F1 bar a brief and disastrous attempt to power Mclaren's, F1 really doesn't need Porsche.

2x Constructor's Championships (1984, 1985)
3x Driver's Championships (1984, 1985, 1986)

You're definition of "disastrous" must be different to mine smile

I think McLaren would take that now...

I can't see what Porsche would gain by entering F1.

I really can't see any upside to Porsche on entering F1. Even if they win.

And AIUI, with lower boost the engine might well have beaten the Hondas in 1988 too. It was competitive in 1987 without being able to run the full 4 bar boost due to fuel economy. But it's not like the 1988 Honda wasn't a good engine ...

I think your recollection is slightly wrong!
Yes, Porsche did have a disastrous comeback with Footwork Arrows team in 1991, but as others have pointed out, were very successful in the V6 1.5litre Turbo era
