Cork based colleague with an Irish accent so strong I suspect it must be an affectation responded to our concerns about a dodgy looking project with 'Oh, it'll be grand'.

What does this mean?

Theories are:

1) The project is on course for a grand success.
2) We have a few issues but we can muddle through to the point where it'll be roughly OK.
3) We don't know what's going to happen but no point in worrying.
4) It's heading for a shambles but in the ultimate scheme of things a failed project isn't the end of the world.

Google translate doesn't help.

Yep. Know an Irish girl and if you say something like "Do you need anything at the shop?" She'll say "No I'm grand". Lovely.

As an Irish member I'm happy to translate any strange sayings. It'll be grand has many meanings depending on context. It usually means their is something wrong but it's nothing to worry about in the immediate future.

clap

That's roughly what I thought, equivalent to our 'it'll be alright on the night'. though I suspect in this case it's 'nothing to worry about' in the sense that the effects will be confined to just this galaxy.

I suspect 3) is where it's currently at, but 4) is the over arching mindset.

The vernacular changes from County to county and often town to town. A few good ones from my locality
Stook (idiot)
Mossy (any male person)
Geraldine (any female)
A cough (a cigarette)
A tin of oil ( a can of coke)
Headlamps (breasts)
Back door (arse)
Gas (lighter)
I was out for the couple of pints chatting to mossy, we went out for a cough and asked a couple of Geraldines for a bit of gas, jaysus one had a fair set of Headlamps on her but the one swigging out the tin of oil had a tidy back door but was a pure Stook
