Does anyone have any idea what the cost of storing new cars is, per hundred / thousand / whatever?

I'm looking at a piece of land for a deal, and the other potential bidder is - from what I hear - planning to park new pre-PDI stock there. So I'm trying to get a handle on the economics of that!

Location is south east, west of London. Area about 1.5 acres.

I'm not looking to offer the service myself; I'm trying to understand the economics of that as a way of helping to value a piece of land.

Assume a provider will put up fencing, floodlighting, cameras, etc.

you are looking at it the wrong way. If you are up against a car dealer with premises in London then whatever the airfield costs it will be cheaper than either redeveloping the original car dealership, finding land in London to park cars or closing the business because the manufacturer is fed up with the customer complaints.

I would suspect that the full deal will be parking space for group stock ( therefore the costs savings above x 2, 3 or 4+ sites) and maybe a pdi centre which will be profit making and probably offset or cover overheads as well as alleviating other business pressures.

I hope this helps.

We pay something like £2 per car per day when we store offsite at a facility.

Thank you for the data points.

FWIW the "competition" would just be using it as hard standing, no PDI centre etc. And it would be a service provider - a parking company - not a dealer.

When I was a student I had to go to some warehouses for a project, was pretty amazed to see one warehouse full of brand new skodas, it was about 2-3 months before the new reg plates came out - they all had them fitted - spoke to the guy and it was pretty regular for them to just occupy an empty warehouse on an as-needed basis. probably had around 100 cars there at the time.

Just because they say it's for storage only doesn't mean they wont put in planning permission once purchased. Enough places will store the car securely for a small fee rather than having an empty unit. IIRC this was about 4 minutes drive away from all the local dealerships

I went to a warehouse one that was stuffed full of brand new Rolls Royce Phantoms. Value of the cars was a lot more than the building!

When it comes to the value dealers will pay to park cars in theory its just slightly more than the under bidder! What I would say is be careful of bidding too much, it might have an impact on business rates etc.
