Hi.

Im coming to this forum with the goal to get some objective thoughts on which car to buy, which i cant get on a more brand orienteted forums.

Anyhow, i used to be an audi guy. Last audi i had was a hevealy modded a4 2.0ts quattro. It was the most wellrounded car i ever had. I loved the car but i had a lot of problems with it, well, i had lots of problems with all my audis.

Deciding to leve audi, i went to another brand i like, mercedes. Being low on chash for the moment i bought a w211 e500. Another great car, super smoth. Very nice feel to it, its been great with almost zero issues for 60 000 km. But im a guy who love to drive my cars, and the e500 is very uninvolving to drive. Its a great a to b car but its not the car you take out on the country road. Its fast but you dont want to drive the e500 fast. You just want to cruise.

Thus, im really looking for a drives car to get my driving passion back.

Whichever car i choose i plan to keep it for a long time, at lest 5 years to forever and buy other cars on the side. The car will be modded with the goal to get high hp and a truley uniqe car. The car will, at lest to begin with be my daily driver. I have a 60 km a day commute and i live on the swedish countryside. Snow comes about 3 weeks a year.

Here is my choices:

The budget choice, e39 m5 01-02. Seems realy fun to drive but getting high hp seems expensive. Quit dated in style. Most of them are high milage. 150 000 km can be had for about 16k usd in sweden.

The choice im leaning torwards, cls 55 05-06. Best looking, most power, easy to get 600 hp, most luxery. A 10 000 km can be had for about 20k usd. But what is it like a drives car on small roads? Will manual mode paddel gearbox be as fun as manual gearbox?

The expensive choice, audi rs4 06-08, i think it will explode but the a4 was great. Great exhaust note, quattro and manual. Expensive to mod. A nice on with 10 000 km goes for 23-24k usd. Maybe to much of a boy racer?

The CLS gearbox is nothing like driving a manual nor is it as swift at changing gear as a DSG style gearbox but you can make them shift faster by sending the gearbox ECU off to somewhere like Weistec & while it's there order uprated torque convertor.

As a car they're a fast weapon not a B Road car but a good fun drive.

Yes, the TCU tune. Do you think the cls can put the fun in to driving or will i still be an old man like in my e500?

Get the old man's fast barge of the 'M' flavour wink

'...dated style.' Read as: svelte, restrained & tasteful shape. Not monstrously huge either (about the size of a modern 3 Series?)

Proper manual gear box.

500hp with a supercharger & headers. You're right, not a cheap upgrade.

Their values are high for a reason. Go figure.

I had as much fun thrashing my M5 as I do my Boxster, so as far as old man barges go, don't let it put you off.

Thanks to all of you for the replys.

I would like to test drive all the cars before buying but i live remote so its hard to find the cars close by, thus trying to gather as much of personal opinions from other people.

Its not so much old man barges that would put me off, more the old man feel. And with that i meen the feeling i get in the e500. The e500 is fast but you dont get inspierd to drive fast, you drive slow in the e500. Just humming forward.

When i drive the e500 fast on b roads, i drive fast for 5 min then i find myself driving slow again because i forget to drive fast.

The car is not involving. Thats what i want to get away from, then i want the modding, striving for hp, and it should be a good car to keep for a long time. Hopefully the car would see the track from time to time.

I really like the cls, good mix between power, style and comfort but im scared it will become just as uninvolving as the e500 pretty fast. Can someone who owned or driven as cls55 shime in here?

I love the styling of the e39 but how is mod and parts support? Is it possible to drive it every day over the years? Can it the car i drive daily to work on the highway, doing spirited driving on the b roads back home? Making mods and driving track on the weekend? Just giving love for long time?

The b7 rs4, seems fun but i think it will brake down at i think its lack a bit of grown up style. I had 4 b7 cars before

That RS4 budget puts you right in the firing line of a Mk2 TTRS here in the UK. Do you need back seats?
What would be the best swedish site to use to get an idea of what used cars cost over there?

If you mean modification and parts support then yes, parts support from BMW is excellent for the E39. Many parts are common to other E39s but a fair number are exclusive to the M5 and carry a hefty M tax. If you shop carefully quite a few of those parts can be bought online from the OE manufacturers for a lot less than BMW will charge - typically 50% cheaper.
There's a reasonable number of well known and reputable suppliers of mod parts - superchargers, headers, exhaust and suspension.

No reason why you shouldn't use the M5 as a daily driver. It would pretty buttock-clenching entertaining to drive it through a Swedish winter on back roads, even with a full set of winter tyres!

Will it 'love you long time'? (....a la Bangkok bar girl? laugh)

Will most certainly 'take you up the arse' financially.

(Seriously, if properly cared for these machines will run to 300k miles. Won't be cheap to do that though.)

Im not in to the ttrs, every time is see one it's a adolescent with a backward at behind the wheel.

I want more of a gentlemens racer, a car that feels like a fine scotch that you enjoy with a pipe when your dressed in tweed, or like Depthhoar suggesting, a little thai girl that will give you one hell of i ride and then run away with all your money. (A car that i will love longtime)

Im good at finding cheap oem parts online so that wont a problem. I was more thinking so the aftermarket support were still alive.

Whichever rear wheel car i choose it would hopefully only see one winter. Everyday rear wheel winter is no fun, last year my own e500 drove over me in a parkinglot, i must be doing something wrong...
