Dunlop SSR on track at Croft
Discussion
I went to Croft today for the first time in my 993 RS. It's a circuit I know well and it's the first time I have been able to give my car full beans on track.
I use Dunlop Supersprt Race Tyres, by far the most talked about tyre on PH's Porsche furum at the moment.
Here's a pic of the front tyre after 4 20 minute sessions. It's got the usual rubber debris but happily this happened across the width of the while tyre. I guess I have the negative camber set up to thank for that. Also notice the V-pattern tread. This tyre looks like a road tyre. I am told the compound is more track orientated though. At least the V pattern should shift water.
Here's a pic of the rears. More tyre debris on the outer edge this time, less negative camber and all that. I found the tyres to be grippy, but only after 2 laps of warming them up. They lasted 20 minutes reasonably, they weren't so great on the last lap or 2......a bit skittish. I ran them at 31-32 PSI hot all rond.
This evil Mo Fo was being tested by its owner who was an optician (!!).
Hands up who recognises this PHer's mad car. Unfortunately Andy suffered a mechanical failure that sent him into the kitty litter. He had the car up on a jack in the pits afterwards and a piece of rear wishbone came away in his hand.......
My old banger.

Nice pics Johnny,
I was very tempted to go on this one today, but just couldn't face the drive all the way up there From Milton Keynes.
Is this the circuit they call the mini Nurburgring ?
There's been alot written about these Dunlop tyres on other forums lately as i'm sure you know, they seem fantastic value, the only thing with that tread pattern though, is that there seems to be less rubber in contact with the road, compared to Cups or corsa's etc. How do you rate them against these ?

Hi Glenn,
I've never tried the Cups/Corsas, but as I have written on other threads, I will stick to SSRs for now because of the tread pattern so that when it rains (and of course it will) I'll have more confidence in the car.
The mini Nurburgring is Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire. I have driven there, it is fairly tight and twisty.....rather narrow in places. A Caterham R300 would be perfect there, but fast Porsches don't really get chance to stretch their legs. I wouldn't say no to another go though.
I do like the pic on your profile. Your GT3 is one of my fave cars on PH. Gotta love those black wheels.
Thanks for the info. Johnny. I must decide Monday what to have fitted. Rear SO2's are shot, fronts are 50%.
My plan was new SO2's on the rear - theory being that then all 4 tyres should wear out at the same time! Then I would change all 4 for the Dunlop SSR's.
But cost of 4 X SSR = cost of 2 rear SO2.
I'm going week after next to Nurburgring with RMA for 2 days. I suspect tyres will be shot after that!

Johnny, do I spy a bit of 'corrosion' around the bolts on your wheels? If yes and you are planning a re-furb IMHO you must get them anodised (not polished and laquered) by Diamond Styling in Norf London.
Yes mate, you spot corrosion, 'fraid so!! I have 2 sets of Speedlines, both are corroded to a fair degree.
I'm not sure what to do as yet.
Plan A:
Leave them as they are (both sets of wheels) and say, "these wheels are for a track car, I am no ponce, who cares if they are corroded?!"
Plan B:
Get one set refurbed, anodised, with new bolts etc, all at huge expense.....leave the other set slightly ropey.
Plan C:
Get both sets refurbed, anodised, new bolts and hang the expense.
Plan D:
Forget about heavy (but pretty and original looking) Speedlines and order gold spoked/polished rimmed BBS 3-piece split-rim mags. Lighter, performance enhancing, very "race car".
Plan E:
Go ahead with plans B and D.......and perhaps flog one set of unrefurbed Speedlines. Very expensive......but probably what I will do.
Regarding Diamond Styling; well, 9M do this anodysing thing as well, and they will put the "Speedline for Porsche" legend on the rim as well which I would have to have. My car is likely to end up there again at some point, maybe I will ask Colin to sort all this out for me?
Or who wants to organise a group buy on BBS mags?

The corrosion around the bolts can look unsightly, the problem can lead to the 3 pics of the rim parting slightly and not being as air tight as you would like.
Prior to having mine refurbed i would lose 5-6 lb pressure over a week or so.
Because the cost to refurb tese wheels is high, corroded wheels are not worth that much relatively. The advantage of 2 sets is that you do not lose the use of the car while your wheels are being done. I wanted to use Diamond styling on mine, but the 6 weeks + time without a set of wheels was too much for me to bare.

All good stuff Doc ...........still cant sleep , wisdom teeth left big holes!!!
I have something to sort out writing on Speedlines , DS take 6 weks ish , but u ave 2 sets ,cost min £1000, cud be £1200.............wud be perfect , then i am sure CB wud nt do anuthing that was nt spot on either.

Thanks Paul and Vic.
You know how lightening your car is like adding horsepower? I once read somewhere that having less unsprung weight (in this case lighter BBS wheels) is like having EVEN MORE horsepower. I suppose because of there being less inertia in the wheel for the engine to turn. I would have thought the car would handle better on BBS wheels as well?? And I wonder how much lighter BBS mags are than the Speedlines?
Edited to say......for fecks sake Vic,, it's Sunday! You should be having a lie in. However I suspect you were up bright and early to get an early game in at the bowls club.......

Absolutely, good Doctor!! It's all down to power-to-weight ratio.
This 'not eating' excuse, Vic, is this a cunning plan to increase the power-to-weight ratio for next week, or is it so that Melindi can get out the tape measure???

Tirerack.com recently had Corsas in 315/30 (GT2) size for an unbelieveable $140 or so on special offer (they had obviously bought too many and weren't selling them well mid-winter!)
I bought 8 rears and had them couriered from the states by air. Even with VAT, import duty and the costs of air-freight, they came out at about £150 per tire in the UK and arrived in under a week to my door.
Sadly they raised the price again a while ago, but it's worth keeping an eye out.

That is good value. I'd certainly buy them at that price.
