Hi

We currently have 2 cars, both of which my husband owns and insures (I don't drive due to medical condition frown ). One is a lease car which is being returned in December, the other is currently only used to tow a caravan and the odd domestic journey.

The lease car has the main ncd of 9 years and is protected. The tow car has lower NCD built up since we have had 2 cars, and is currently at 5 years, not protected.

Tow car insurance renews in January so was going to swap to main car NCD at that stage. But hubby has just had a small prang involving a bollard in the supermarket car park cry (tried to warn him when he parked it would be tough getting back out ... nonorolleyes )

Damage is £1750 eek - we'll need a new door as there was a previous repair we were unaware of. And so we're claiming on the insurance.

Does that mean we can no longer swap NCD in January (we would be disclosing this claim too) ? Or were we mistaken to think it could be swapped in the first place? confused

Difference in quotes is circa £150 (part of which is down to change from 5k miles to 20k per annum as it will become our 50+ mile a day commute car as well as tow car).

First claim in over 9 years mad

Thanks

Not sure I completely understand your question, but yes you can use whichever no claims you want on whichever car you want.

If you've had a claim on the 9-year-NCD policy, there will no longer be 9 years of discount to move though, so you wouldn't gain anything.

It will possibly go back to 3 years of NCD (you don't normally lose it all for one claim).

Hi

Thanks for that and for not being clear. 9 years protected NCD will not be claimed against as it's on the policy currently with our lease car. The car with the new claim has 5 years NCD unprotected (no claims to now, only had a 2nd car 5 years), so will go down to 3 at renewal in Jan.

But as we will no longer have the lease car in Jan when the claim car insurance is up for renewal, we were (pre claim) going to renew with 10 years protected and let the other NCD lapse (after 24 months, No?).

Worried that now we have a claim on the car we're keeping, although it will be disclosed at renewal, that switching from the now reduced 3 years NCD to 10 years protected NCD makes me feel like I'm cheating somehow. Or is this still ok so long as the claim is disclosed?

Thanks again.

Should be fine. You have to disclose the accident/claim anyway (regardless of car/policy) , and - despite your protected NCD - the underlying premium is likely to rise simply because you've had a claim.

Though policies are sold at 6/7/8/9 yrs NCB and documented so, most only give a discount up to 5 years anyway.

So essentially you had 5 on r A and 5 on car B.

One claim will likely reduce Unprotected NCB from 5 to 3 years.

I missed that the 9 years' NCD is protected.

So yes, as someone else said, you can't transfer that NCD to the other car but will have a higher pre-discount price than without the claim.
