Themostat - HELP!

I've just taken my thermostat out to replace it but failed to note which way round it went - DOH!
The bible doesn't cover this level of stupidity and its probably obvious to you lot but I dont wan't to have to take it apart again so I thought I woulg check.
So does the big spring point into the engine or away?

On my griff,in and if you have a little ball valve, it goes at the top. Judging by the post time, you have probably done it!
