Morning Pistonheads!

I'm looking for some advice on buying a car for myself and my partner to share. We live in central(ish) London and wanted a runaround that wouldn't drink too much fuel and would allow us to have some freedom from the tube network.

We settled on a Hyundai i20 S (similar car to the one we both learnt to drive in), and went to a dealer in Basingstoke to look at their offers on the vehicle. We were told at the dealership that they have a good offer on at the moment, which ultimately came to £10,740 for a brand new 67 plated i20 S, with 5 years warranty, 5 years roadside assistance and 5 year 'health checks'. This being based on paying 60 payments if £179 at 0% APR.

Now I am a complete car novice, but I also saw in the showroom that you could get used models of the same car on a 66 plate for around £8500, typically with about 20,000 mileage on the clock. I am not sure what extras they come with though (warranty,RA etc).

Question being : should I buy brand new or buy used? - Are the added benefits of buying new worth the difference? (I'm a little worried about the immediate depreciation)

Thanks

Also look at the Kia Picanto (it's the same car) you get 7 years Warranty on that one both will drop in value but if you want a car to be a nippy town car both are worth a look the Kia seems to come with more kit.

Picanto is the i10, not the i20.

At £7,299 I'd be going for a used car from Motorpoint.

Over four years (so you end up with a five-year-old car at the end of the deal that's never out of warranty) you pay £165 per month with no deposit with M&S Bank.

Use Broadspeed or Carwow to drive the brand new price down, likely by another £1K. It would close the difference between new and used so you start with new tyres, complete warranty, no service needed for a full year etc and the new car will be worth a little more at resale. I bought my partner an I20 SE 2 years ago using the Carwow quote to push my local dealer that last bit more and have been very pleased with the car.

My mistake so it's the Kia C'eed that's the comparison.

Nope, the Rio: the new (2017 onwards) Rio shares a platform with this generation of i20.

Thanks for all of your help guys.

Is there any reason that this car is nearly £3500 cheaper than a new model after only one year? (other than just a years depreciation).

It still has the balance of warranty on it too, which makes me think there is something else at play here.

Heaviest depreciation is in the first year, partially as it's often cheaper to buy new (for those on finance only looking at the monthlys) so the delta at a year old has to be larger proportionally.

Also remember 20% of the car is VAT - that's a 1 off tax charge which won't all be reflected in the value of an older car.
