Hi All

Just had the PRNDS flash of death and had to drive 60 miles home in first gear.

Took to dealers and they say £5k for new gearbox fittedI

a FSH 2006 Mk5 R32 125k so only worth about 5k

They did offer a wiring check for a couple of hundred quid but VW had recommended replacement due to age etc etc

So at a cross roads as had car since new

I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place

Whats the breakers/auction value of an R32 with non functioning gearbox ?

Asked them to investigate scrappage scheme if I could make a valid claim against it

Any other thoughts ?

Are you anywhere near Bristol? I know a VW mechanic who I believe will be able to help

First hit on eBay.

Plenty of secondhand ones on there from £500, get it fitted, sell the car. Better than trading it in on scrappage and losing your ass on it.

You could get a reconditioned for half that or less probably if you want to go down the keep the car route.

You need to get it scanned with VCDS. If could be just an issue with the selector.

At that age and mileage I'd find a decent independent and get them to sort it. I can imagine it coming in at anywhere near £5,000.

Like Minieggs said - get the part number from the dealers. My A4 quattro rear diff failed (at 70k, curse you Audi), Audi wanted nearly 5k plus fitting, while I absorbed that news the parts guy said, "let me get you the part number so you can look on ebay". Hey presto, 200 euros got me a 2nd hand rear diff from Latvia (seriously, they had two!), local indy fitted it for a couple of hours labour. Sorted - well it got the car far enough for me to trade it in!

Isn't it the gearbox mechatronics module that usually fails.

it is about 1k to fix usually.

Unlikely the actual gearbox has failed, I'd find someone local as with VCDS it it could be a mechatronic issue or a selector issue. If so then just get a new/your unit refurbed.

I had this issue on my GTI. It only did it a few times.
Only when battery was flat.

Someone with VCDS could probably diagnose the fault. I wouldn't write it off yet. A replacement gearbox and mechatronic unit is under 500 quid on eBay.
