Whats going on with Diesels
Discussion
Hey All
As the title suggest has anyone got an understanding of whats happening with diesel motors before I really get into swapping out my MK5 GTi.
Hands up, I do 8000 miles a year with occasional long journeys but want something with good power and MPG and these modern dervs really do provide (looking at a 2010 2.0 TDi DSG scirocco). Petrol equivalents have higher tax, lower economy and higher insurance which inst what I want in a daily considering I'm looking to get a weekend s14 /rx7 /gtst in the future.
Thanks in advance and go easy on me

I'd wholly avoid diesels if you're only doing 8K per year, especially on a 7 year old car.

Sorry that was a bit vague, well obviously we've got the T charge now for cars below euro 4, I cant remember the last time i drove in London as I hate the place. But heard that there will be charges all over the UK, also the cost of tax and fuel will be purposely increased but nothing is put into action.I'd wholly avoid diesels if you're only doing 8K per year, especially on a 7 year old car.
Unfortunately 7 year old is my budget ideally was looking around £6000 but would stretch as I do like the siroccos which are a euro 5 so it should be safe......or will it.
And I should but I would like something nice thats got a decent auto box and will be able to get away from a roundabout or overtake on the motorway but not return poor economy. Cake and eat it too huh

Older diesels can be problematic. I think you'd be better off with a 2.0TFSI DSG personally, and take the hit on the bit extra of fuel.
I share your concern and have just stepped away from signing up to a new diesel as I can't assess either the direct tax or the indirect taxes/costs. It's all very well having a nice new car with fixed monthlies but I drive into London and the major cities in the U.K. fairly often and it is potentially a material cost.
