Whats the deal ?! They often seem to be higher than indie prices and rarely much below.
I am looking on autotrader and there are loads at 26 - 30 which is the same bracket as Cridfords, 911virgin, portiacraft etc..........
I would have thought that an indie price should be 3 - 5K over private.
Just suprised that private sellers arent more often pricing their cars realistically.

This is the usual game....Private sellers either have a px price agreed or a floor price from a dealer/independent where they can sell the car. If you advertise the car at a price above this, you may have some luck in selling....You can't really put the price up once you have advertised, but you can lower it to secure a sale to an interested party. Most importantly you need a little margin over your dealer or px price to make allowances for the clowns who may well show an interest...Cars sold privately outside OPC warranty period need to be exceptional or cheaper to sell in the current enviroment.

Virtually all the cars I have seen advertised in the sub 30K region are without OPC warranty. Not sure it is that relevant in that price bracket.
I wasnt going to bother with a warranty. Certainly not an OPC one.
RMS at £400 once a year is cheaper than a warranty.

£11,000 for a new engine? No thanks.

Let's be clear about this, engine failures are rare, but they do happen on 996s (as they do on all other cars - even E46 M3s have had some engines let go.)

A £60k car needs a manufacturers warranty unless you can afford to chuck it away if there is a major problem.

£725 a year is cheap in my view (£60 a month for peace of mind .............) A car needs to pass a stringent examination before Porsche will issue a warranty.

Cheaper cars haven't passed (and won't be able to) so no Porsche warranty. They are the ones which are cheaper, because if the engine goes then tough, basically.

I would recommend you do waht I did (pay top whack and get one from an OPC with a warranty) or buy from a sprcialist and have the car checked by an OPC and have them back it with a warranty (slightly cheaper.)

As I have said, it took me 10 years to save for my 996, which was just about the cheapest one in the OPC network (£40k) - all I could afford. I certainly can't afford a new engine, so the peace of mind I have from the warranty makes the car enjoyable

Warranties are just ins policies. They make a profit on them.
Having had to fork out for an engine rebuild on a cerbera I know the limits of a warranty ie they dont pay if they can find any crass way of wriggling out.
There must be independant servicers who can rebuild an engine for less than 11K !
The cheapest OPC 996 is going to be above my budget.
A 27K 996 sounds great value and if I need to spend a few K on the engine in a few yrs then so be it.
It is better than being stung for 7k depreciation when you drive away from an OPC. ie certainty v's chances.

I guess it's swings and roundabouts.....

The Porsche warranty used to be insurance backed, but it was getting a slating, so now it is run by Porsche themselves in the same way as the new car warranty, with slightly different terms and conditions.

I've reviewed them (work as a commercial lawyer) and they seem to lack "weasel words" so far as I can see.

It's sad that we're talking about engine failures on relatively new Porsches....should be bullet proof for the price!! Ho Hum...

A warranty doesn't mske any car a great car.

Porsches are beatufully manufactured and with a full service history should be a reliable purchase --- hence their strong residual value.

Take out the dealer insurance or not --- it's your choice, not the dealers.

I have always preferred to use a good specialist once depreciation has taken a chunk out of the new price. And there is a lot of RMS scaremongering.

Who knows anybody that has forked out £10k + for a new engine because of a known fault engine failure ?

To my knowledge, porsche are very supportive of their market.

I did the gearbox on my first 996, a 99/S Carrera 2.

I believe the replacement gearbox and fitting was about £12k.

Lets just say i was glad i bought from a dealer, i would consider a warranty at £6-700 to be a sensible idea.
