Years ago MrsC & I did our "courting" in the West End and were frequently to be found in Soho, Covent Garden, Mayfair, eating & drinking. It's been a good few years, and we've since moved out of town, but we fancy an evening up there again for my birthday next month.

Cocktails, champagne, and some non-too-formal, non-too-heavy food would be the order of the day. But so much has come and gone and changed so we need a bit of a steer.

Where did we go previously? Hmm, places springing to mind are Randall & Aubin, Bocca di Lupo, The Atlantic, Kettners, Barrafina, Refuel….straying a little further, Drakes Trabanco….must have been plenty of others, can't think of any right now.

Budget - well I don't want to spend £500 on a small shot and one tapa, but we'll push the boat out a bit for a decent evening.

Over to you!

Thanks.

I love Gauthier in Soho, run by Alexis Gauthier

It's set in and looks like a terrace town house, you knock on the front door to get in and will be seated in a room somewhere in the house. It's characterful, excellent food, wine and service

Andrew Edmunds for Food. Went there after it was recommended on PH, very good, not fussy and really friendly place.

Bob Bob Ricard is always fun in an opulent, slightly over the top kind of way. Also the Bar Americain at Brasserie Zedel is fun too.

L'Atellier De Joel Robuchon has been excellent both times I've been there. Modern, impeccable service by waiters with a sense of humour, great seating at the counter where you can see things going on, decent portions too.

I like the look of the Joel Robuchon place. Is it reassuringly expensive, drastically expensive, or eye-wateringly expensive?

Both times I've been it's been pre theatre, so they do a deal for £45 for 3 courses...which I thought was excellent value, especially as you get the equivalent of 2 starters, and 2 deserts by way of some little extra dishes served. It's michelin starred, it's not going to be cheap, but it's not bad.

Pre theatre is between certain times, but you could go for early dinner, and then go for some nice drinks after.

I really like rules.

A great place for a few cocktails is Mr Foggs, but it’s a little way from soho. Definitely worth it though

Cahoots has a similar vibe to Mr Foggs and actually is in Soho (Beak St).

In terms of restaurants, my go-tos are Yauatcha, Barrafina, Social Eating House, Dean St Townhouse. The former 3 have 1 Michelin Stars, but quite lively so if you want a romantic, refined atmosphere, not the best. Only Gauthier fits that bill in the area.
Others to check are Chotto Matte, Flavour bds, Temper, The Ivy, Hix (gone downhill though), Copita.
