Now - I'm glad to say, though they were in it at the time, no hurt done other than rather-bruised feelings.

Car shunted hard into junction from behind, pirouetted left into/over high kerb. bent fore/aft, and a write-off, no doubt of that.
The black Corsa that rammed them from behind sped off - they have a witness willing to give a statement to that effect. No registration noted.
The junction might have some cctv coverage, and the Police have said they will investigate if anything relevant is available.
Parents have a crime reference number.
The car was insured, with protected NCB, and actually of no great value though they were fond of it (the old utterly-reliable daily runaround Ka)

So now it's down to paperwork.

What other avenues have we not thought of, to expedite resolution / keep the record straight/ punish the malefactor..?

It's a daily annoyance to many I'm sure - but despite reading these things here often, right now I can't hep feel I'm missing a trick; so thanks for any suggestions.

'Write-off' not 'right-off'. The car is written off from any asset list because it has zero value.

Was it an old style Ka?, because that was not particularly crash-worthy.
