As UV suggested, I thought I'd put the feelers out regarding a possible group buy for BBS racing mags. I mean the 3 piece light weight fellas, not the 2 piece (but also very nice) BBS Le Mans road car wheel. Gold spoke and polished rims are what I want!!

Everyone knows it is really expensive to refurb Speedline splitrims, I'm thinking a set of BBS mags instead, if at the right price, might be a good idea, and keep the Speedlines for later when I have funds to refurb the barsteward things.

I know UV and I are interested, and clubsport (Paul who has a 993 RS) is also interested I think.

So how to do it?

Vic Cohen said on this forum: "Steve Winter at Jaz 0208 903 1118 has a very good link to BBS got me some great lightweight rims at super cheap price ..............worth a call".

I think Burzel knew where we might get them too. Oh yes.....and Colin Belton asked me to give him a shout if I ever managed to find a good price for some. Then there's Tim Court who is looking for some for his GT3.....that's quite a few people.

A certain lucky PHer owns this car.....I don't think he got the lovely mags with it though:

This pic I nicked off the BBS Motorsport website. Obviously we would be wanting the wheel on the left, 5 stud jobby.

I am crap at stuff like off sets/sizes needed and all that, so if someone wants to chip in with stuff like that, great. I know BBS can make them in just about any size and configuration, you just need to tell them what you want. I also understand that delivery can take a while??

Anyway, enough rambling on, please post a reply if you fancy a set.

UMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmm.......

Yep, i'll take a set assuming the price is reasonable. Might want to see if we can get a tyre and wheel deal.

I have no idea what my offsets are either...

I would like a set, but with builders in at the moment I am spending pounds like they are turkish Lira!...no immediate rush..

I think 993RSR ( John C) has a good contact for discount on the BBS.

JohnnyS.....I saw your car just over a year ago with a set of gold centred BBS fitted....the rims had "BBS RACING" on them in 2" letters....I have to say it did float my boat ...as it were

You are not kidding.....gotta love the big red BBS writing on the polished rims. Sex on wheels.....if you get my meaning.

Ah yes, I was just doing a search on the forum and I found that John had offered to help folk get these wheels via his contact. I'll e-mail him and ask him to have a peek at this thread.

Tim Court is def up for this....

Funny but I spoke to BBS asked for 10's and 8's for my GT3. I have just got an email from BBS giving a price, but then they came back saying "Wot u need is 11's and 9's with such and such an offset.

After extensive research with a tape measure, a fleshy feeler gauge (my fingers), a call to Gert at Carnewal, I have the suspicion they have offered me 996RSR sizes cos they will not fit the front.

So I am willing to delay if we can sort out a group buy....

Johnny S - I need to pass a bit more info to you away from prying eyes so email me.....

I've just made this thread a "sticky" at someones request. I'd just like to point out that Pistonheads has no involvement in this proposed group buy, anyone taking part is acting indepently of this site.

I could possibly be interested, but not likely for a couple of months....anyone got an idea of ball-park figures for a Mk1 GT3?

Vaguely recall from somewhere that Manthey were doing BBS Motorsport wheels for about the 2-2.5k mark - possibly a nicer set than std BBS...?

Don't Manthey use the one piece wheels? They are nice, but not a sexy to look at as the 3 piece ones!!

Guys, following on from observations on another post by myself & GuyR it may well be worth looking into buying your BBS stateside taking advantage of the comparitively weak $$$$..

We are not after std BBS. We are looking to purchase some sexy gold centred, BBS lettered 3 piece Motorsport wheel known as the "GT".

Confirming the price is the hard part. All the various reports of cheap wheels never seem to give the door to door price i.e. carriage?? VAT?? Import tax???

I have been quoted 1062 euros for a 10x18 less 25% discount + shipping of 32 euros + 16% tax.

I havent got a clue if Gordon the money-grabbing slug of a chancellor will have his boys in blue trying to extract any more of my hard earned, for the priviledge of passing over the UK threshold????

Sensible point there Paul.

Tim, I've replied to your e-mail.

I had an e-mail of Burzel (Paul Howells) who had this advice on BBS mags:

"Mag wheels are race wheels and not road wheels, and technically not road legal with dot and tuv etc.
So if you had a mag wheel fail on the road, you may have a problem.
Mags also need crack testing regularly,as I know people who have had at least 3 cracked spokes in one wheel, where they have been driven hard over track curbs such as the ring etc.
A lot of wheels you see that are gold etc are infact ali and not mag. They do look the same, but ali is more durable but slightly heavier.
Give me a call if you want to discuss further."

What do you fellas think?

The Manthey wheels which are one-piece and complete magnesium are the lightest wheels in the world for their size (under 8kg each) and are TuV approved for road-use. However they are £5,000 for a set of 4 wheels, as supplied by Manthey or JZ Machtech. These wheels are made exclusively for Manthey and are based on the BBS one-piece magnesium race wheel.

The three piece wheels you are talking about are heavier and only have a magnesium centre. They are cheaper and rebuildable though if they crack the centres or you hit the rim. They are pictured and available from Carnewal here:

www.carnewal-europe.com/cpx_p029.htm

You would need to add shipping and VAT to these prices, but there is no import duty as they in the EU.

Blimey Guy, 5 grand!! I actually prefer the look of the split rims though, so vain am I.

I will have a look at the URL you gave Guy, but can't get on their site at the moment.

I would have thought that alloy versions that look identcal to the BBS race wheel would be OK? Especially if it was lacquered? What do you all think?

Just dug out the invoice for those wheels
as of 29/10/2001 the wheels cost
2x 9x18 3112 DM (1020 GBP)
2x 11x18 3123 DM (1023 GBP)
From Manthey, I think theres Tax as well, bit alarmed about the cracking issue, think I'll just go and check them!

Hi Paul,

I didn't know they came with the car....were they on the car at Oulton? I can't remember.

Is there any detail on the invoice about what they are, model designation etc? I notice they are an inch wider front and rear than standard.
