planing a holiday in S Ireland

Never been to Southern Island before, but my wife likes the idea.
We were planing to drive up to Wales to get the ferry across to Dublin, then head south....and that's all I know!
hopefully either rent somewhere for a week to use as a base or travel around staying in various hotels.
Can anybody recommend places to stay/see?
BTW, I spent 10 days in N Ireland on business a few years ago and liked it a lot.

Yes, do it, take a fast car which handles and head for Doolin via the Cliffs of Moher (just south of Doolin) Doolin has some spectacular rock formations and the pub is good Crab Island off Doolin is one of Irelands best surf breaks and you may catch some spectacular action there. I think we crashed out in Lahinch which had a good vibe at night and was interesting in the day.
I regret taking a diesel van as there were plenty of hooning opportunities! If you go to Doolin, you will not be let down. The coast drive north from there is double spectacular as well with some amazing scenery. You really have to do the Lahinch start and then up the coast road, it was totally mind blowing. I will take the mini there when it's running properly, it had such hooning potential (is that PC to encourage enjoying your car?)

Holyhead - Dublin - Galway - Roundstone - Adare - Dingle Peninsula - Ring of Kerry (but got bored of following coaches at 25mph so hooked a left and went through the centre, AWESOME roads, mostly single track with about 5miles visibility across the plateau, came back onto the ring at Waterville, then something like - Cork - Ballarney - Cashel (via the Swiss Cottage) - Port Loias - Dublin - Loghskinney - Belfast - Amargh - Dublin - home (Chester)
Loved every second of it.

Can't really help with that, I'afraid. I spent all my time working in Sainsburys in Ballymena and Craigavon.
Only had time to see the Giants Causeway.
The people were very friendly and the scenery, what we saw of it, was great.

Personally speaking, and this is just a personal opinion:
Avoid Dublin.
Cork rather than Kerry. Too many tourists in Kerry already, time the rest of the country got a go. Base yourself in Macroom, cracking town. Visit the local cattle mart and let everyone think you're a foreign buyer. Watch them bid up their own stock.....
Conemara good, but Donegal's even better. I live there, can point you in the direction of the best pints. Still Southern, evern if it is the most Northerly bit of Ireland.
Nothing wrong with Belfast for a city break. Vastly underrated, and overfeared. Not Southern, though.
Remember, all the speed limits here are in kilometers per hour now. That 100 sign doesn't mean take-off speed!
