When asked "how many stock keeping units do you have?", is this the number of individual different product types I sell, or the total number of sales units I have for sale?

Individual products, not volume.
That's my understanding.

IMHO I'd say not quite right - these are 2 products.

But if you retailed these as singles and multi-packs these would be different SKUs, albeit fundamentally the same items.

So assuming singles and 12 packs, 4 SKUs.

Or, for clothing you'd have one product, and the sizes would be SKUs per size.

It depends on the individual company and what they regard as distinct products. For example one retailer I worked with regarded items at promotional prices or in BOGOF deals as different SKUs from the same product at full price.

... and then there are also the items which have SKUs but are not sold i.e. components of packs / components for manufacture. It's a somewhat nebulous term.

It gets even more complex because one SKU may be used to identify a base product but the product in question will also have another code such as a serial number that actually identifies the configuration of the product. So the same SKU but the price could differ significantly.
