Engine noise increase solved

Making a flat noise louder does not improve it. Imagine the commentary when the exhaust microphone fails:
Crofty: "...and HAMILTON'S car has CUT OUT! DISASTER FOR THE ENGLISHM-"
Brundle: "Looks alright, must be the microphones they've been fitting to the exhaust to tinker with the sound for viewers at home. It would have been a lot easier to just sort out this ridiculous engine formula we've got."
Crofty: "These engines are just engineering marvels aren't they Martin, but they're just not really doing it for me. As a lifelong fan of F1 since my early thirties, I miss the screaming V12s of the early nn... eight... seventies?"

Me too, the volume is great because you can still have a conversation track-side while the race is on rather than being in a noise isolation tank.The quality is quite good off-board too, lots of whooshing and whistling etc. Onboard is a bit dull, but so was the droning V10/V8 imo.
Is that real or is it a joke? Would they really fit microphones to the exhaust system? Is it so German companies like BMW will enter F1? I know they like to have car noises played through the sound systems in their cars.
The best thing about these hybrid F1s is that you can sometimes hear the tyres working, but even they seem to have been quietened down since the first season of the hybrids.
I think the Americans are trying to turn it into a show, rather than a competition to see who can make the fastest cars.

One of the articles goes as far as saying as a joke why not fit the cars with sound cards then and play V10 noises instead!
I think we'll all just have to accept the noise as it is till 2021but from then make damn sure they get it right, horner reckons all said and done it'll probably end up V6 twin turbo but what they'll need to do is increase the fuel flow rate so they can make them rev higher thus more noise, let's be real it ain't ever going to in back to V8s or V10s, those days are long gone

The noise doesn't just need to be louder, it needs to be better. A crap sound made louder is does not become a good sound. Just go back to 3.0 n/a V10s and be done with it FFS!
Your right.This year at sliverstone I too one of the kids to his first GP.
He thought the sound of the f1 cars were great, until the v10 two seater started lapping.
Even the gp2/3 cars sound so much more visceral.
I like the tech of the current cars, and hope it develops enough to persuade the gov to dump it's 2040 electric only pledge, but they do not sound as good.

The irony is that V6 turboes can sound great - most of them did on their last iteration in the 80s. The Honda and Renaults were both every loud indeed and it was lovely noise too. Mind you , so out of touch are some involved with Formula 1 that they haven't a bloody clue what we mere punters like- Nigel Roebuck has told the story of how Max Mosley asked him whether the noise was actually part of the crowd's enjoyment .
I can't express a definitive view on current hybrids as I haven't heard them live- but I have heard every other type of F1 engine from trackside and whilst the worst sounding will obviously be the Pratt and Whitney Gas Turbine in the Lotus 63 the best is harder to choose . I think a draw between Matra MS 120 V12, Ferrari 641 V12 and the unbelievably noisy Toyota V10. Hon mention for BRM V16 and Ferrari Dino 246 (not the road car!)

Have you watched many races in person in the V8 era? The days of fire-spitting NA on the over-run with all the pleasant sounds that followed are long gone, and with the short braking distances you don't even get to hear them wind down very far either.
Having the faff of ear defenders track-side for a whole weekend (and especially in hot races like Monza) was annoying too.

F1 2017 Monza Italian GPThis gives a good idea of the current noise, I think.
