sony BDP-S6500 not upscaling to 4k
Discussion
Hi,
I 've just purchased a sony BDP-S6500 blu-ray player primarily for the 4k upscaling as I have a new Samsung 4k TV.
For blu-ray the telly tells me that its receiving a 4k picture, but for dvd I can only get 1920 x 1080 / 50p (which is HD I think) according to the TV. I've tried playing with the settings on the player with no luck, anyone experienced something similar?
Reading the manual it says it will upscale 24p video content (I'm not entirely sure what that means, despite googling)
thanks

Your 4K TV will upscale all inputs to 4K - that's the only way they can display anything less than 4K and still fill the whole screen.
Your options are to allow the TV to do it or upscale off-board and send to the TV.
In my experience the upscaling is normally best done using the TV (some of the better players from the likes of oppo can actually do a better job of it but they're 6 to 8 times the price of that Sony).
Getting 1080P from DVD is actually upscaling - perhaps the Sony chipset is only capabale of doubling up: 1080 to 4K, 576 (DVD) to 1080 etc.
I wouldn't worry about it. Try playing a BR disc natively into the TV and compare the i,age to the same disc now upscaled to 4K ising the Sony. Any real, noticeable difference? If not, then you're not losing anything by turning off upscaling for DVD too.
24P relates to 24 frames per second, progressively scanned - around half the 'normal' rate but gives a smooth 'cinematic' presentation.
