Acting on behalf of his widow, I've just sold a vehicle belonging to a friend who died a few months ago.
I've completed the V5 with the new keeper details and he has signed it and been given the V5C.
The law requires that both the registered keeper and the new keeper should sign should sign. As the registered keeper obviously can't sign it, should someone sign on his behalf, or should it be returned unsigned?

Thanks for that link SS2.
I hadn't been able to find the right part of the DVLA site.

Does it actually matter?

would DVLA reject the V5 because of the signature?

How would they even know that whatever signautre is on the V5 is the correct one or not?

This.

Also just do it online, no signature needed.

Are you sure that a change of registered keeper can be done on line?

Does the V5 need to be posted?

Yep, when I bought my daughters car, we did the change of keeper in the previous owners lounge on their phone straight after I'd paid for it, the V5 was then binned and a week later a new one with my daughters name on it, arrived in the post.

When my Father died, I sold his car back to the dealer he'd bought it from 2 weeks earlier. On the V5 I signed my name with 'executor of...' at the dealer's suggestion, had no problems with DVLA etc.

To be fair I don't think DVLA particularly look at who signed it anyway.

I did likewise when I sold my late mother's car. No comeback from anywhere
