Really want to get hold of a couple of REALLY loud rockets, the kind that set every car alarm off for at least a mile. It seems to me that nowadays in this dumbed down H&S society, fireworks have become more and more tame, with the average outdoor pack being the equivalent of "indoor" fireworks when I was a kid.

Are these confined to licensed operators now or can they still be purchased by civilians like me?

Go in to a fireworks shop on an industrial estate and ask.

We went in with £200 in cash and walked out with a single, several hundred shot industrial sized roman candle which needed strapping to a fence post, and set off every car alarm in the little market town we were in. Just ask. The worst they can say is no...

Bangers were 2 bob for a box of 10 when I was a kid! and they had a really loud bang.

I really detest people setting fireworks off all year round.
Bonfire night and have done with it, not three weeks before and after.

Crow scarers are similar but have longer delay fuses.

Talk to Nigel at Galactic Fireworks 01909 560011 - he does mail order all year. Tell him Steve from firework fantasia recommended him to you. Btw, you're better off buying a decent cake than rockets. You can also buy bird scaring rockets from any agricultural suppliers but they are that loud nowadays as have they have a max dB limit.

Every year I do the most pitiful, dreary display at home for the kids and every year I promise myself I'm going to get on ebay a few weeks after bonfire night and get some cord and a control box so I can just really surprise them with a half decent one.

Then I forget about it completely. Until someone starts a thread on PH about fireworks a few weeks before bonfire night. Every fking year.

I'd really like to get hold of some of them too, but I haven't got enough fingers left after what happened last time.

Lidl and Aldi apparently do a decent but small range of quality stuff.

Not that difficult to get into doing professional displays if you want a go with more powerful stuff.

You can make an entertaining diy rocket out of a d-type Estes (spelling?) model rocket motor and some of those bangers. You do need to think about the banger's fuse time and the motor's delay a little so that the whole thing isn't completely irresponsible. We've managed to chuck the bangers into a low cloud at about 1000ft this way. A very noticeable delay between the flash and the bang, and it lights up the cloud for an instant.

Far more expensive in the run up to bonfire night - think it was about 3x more pricey when I last looked at it! For something that will set off about £50's worth of fireworks for 3 kids under 10, I'm not spending much on it!

If you succeed then

(1) let us know where you got said firework
(2) film it and post it up
