The Porsche 911 GT2 RS has set the fastest time for a lap of the Nürburgring by a rear-wheel drive car.
Also claiming the second-fastest road car record with a time of 6:47.30 - just 1.4sec slower than the all-electric Nio EP9 hypercar - Porsche broke its own target of 7:05.00 by almost 18 seconds.
Porsche ran two cars around the ’Ring for the record run; one driven by test driver Lars Kern, the other by racing driver Nick Tandy, although Kern set the fastest time.
The time makes the GT2 RS not only the fastest Porsche 911 of all time around the famous circuit but the fastest Porsche, beating the lap time of the 918 Spyder by more than 10 seconds.
Rather than being a one-off flying lap, however, Porsche claims that the 7:05.00 target was beaten time and again during the record runs, with five of its laps ducking under the 6:50.00 threshold.
Andreas Preuninger, the GT model line director, said: “We’re particularly proud of the fact that this was achieved with two different vehicles and two different drivers, as this underlines the GT2 RS’s ability to reproduce this record result over and over again.”
Frank-Steffen Walliser, Porsche’s motorsport and GT car vice president, said: “The credit for beating our target goes to our development engineers, mechanics and drivers, who demonstrated an exceptionally strong team performance.”
The weather conditions were described as ‘ideal’, while the cars wore road legal Michelin Pilot Cup 2 tyres for the record run.

It's a fake. Customer cars won't be that fast. Dodgy video. Something about drivers. 720S is still quicker. Am I doing this right?
Amazing time and a proper scarey looking lap. Looked to be hitting 200mph in several places.

The funny thing is, the people dismissing the performante time are raving about this Porsche lap on other social media platforms!
Isn't that because the Germans are completely trustworthy...and regardless it's politically incorrect to ever question them.. unlike those naughty Italians? I mean whenever I want a nice breath of fresh air I simply stand behind any diesel from VW.edit: joking aside Misha was there on the day independently and put up a video with a very similar time so the circumstances appear to be legitimate. He put the video up a day before the actual time was officially announced.

The fact that Porsche have thrown a lot of power/aero/engineering at the car rather than claiming some fairytale aero concept might have something to do with it.... And the fact that historically Porsche have come a lot closer to matching their claimed performance than Lambo for that matter. Still waiting for the SportAuto supertest with the performante actually (somewhat odd it hasn't come out yet over the summer).. should make for an interesting comparison to the gt2 rs.isaldiri said:

Edit: the Porsche looked very stable throughout if that can be said at those speeds

Porsche and Lambo now in a whole different league to Ferrari and McLaren and starting to open up a big performance gap.
'a whole different league'Really how? GT2RS may be a bit quicker round the 'Ring than a 720 but one is a road car and the other is a track car.
At the lower end of the ranges a 540C has very similar performance to a 991 Turbo S.
If anything Porsche and Lambo have now caught up with Ferrari and McLaren.

Out of respect for Mr Belloff and his old 6.25.9 lap, that should read the 'fasted road-legal Porsche'.The time makes the GT2 RS not only the fastest Porsche 911 of all time around the famous circuit but the fastest Porsche, beating the lap time of the 918 Spyder by more than 10 seconds.
.........
Still, that GT2 RS is properly quick and extremely impressive for a car running on road tyres.

Really how?
the 6:47 and the Performante's times are very impressive and not much comparesReally how?
Ferrari have realized they can't compete and sensibility stopped caring, choosing to focus on the desirability of the brand from an emotional perspective (though their cars are hugely capable but imo the tdf is a silly car)

I would say the opposite. Ferrari and McLaren have not yet caught up with Porsche when it comes to road/track cars. Really how? GT2RS may be a bit quicker round the 'Ring than a 720 but one is a road car and the other is a track car.

It's a great time by the Porker. Very goodlooking car.

The GT2 RS time will probably get beaten by the Aventador Performante in 2018.
Some proper Ring Wars going on.
Only because they are half a development cycle behind.Porsche and Lambo now in a whole different league to Ferrari and McLaren and starting to open up a big performance gap.

The 720LT and 488GTO will no doubt make the GT2RS look like a Ford Ka.

This nonsense will probably stop when one of the manufacturers test drivers ends up in a wooden box. These results are as much the talent of the driver as the ability of the car. Pointless nonsense and very dangerous.
IMO.

Took the words out of my mouth. IMO.

Its all pub talk. If we all had a GT2RS none of us would attempt to match that time at the ring. Its simply pointless.

Sometimes Yipper, I think you live in a different reality to the rest of us, based on what you write.Porsche and Lambo now in a whole different league to Ferrari and McLaren and starting to open up a big performance gap.

Porsche... good looking?

you're right, driving for one lap as fast as possible is lethal. I think qualifying for F1 and other fast motorsports should be banned too...IMO.
