Deltic at Watercress Line 'Diesel Gala'

I've never seen a (the!) Deltic running, but I'm not sure I'll be able to make to the Watercress Line for the Diesel Gala weekend (20th-22nd October; details here: https://www.watercressline.co.uk/product.php/25/di...

How can I find out when it is arriving/leaving? I'm hoping I might be able to see it on the mainline network en route to or from the Gala. Would it likely be moving under it's own power on the mainline?

How do these 'visiting' engines get there? Are they put on a low loader and driven or are they moved under power on the rail network? Looks like a good line up.

It depends...falls into 3 basic types:

• Lowloader and road movement for stuff without things like ultrasonic axle test certification...and obviously sites not rail connected.
• Towed dead by rail for stock with UAT certification and other safety related considerations.
• Driven to site under power...mainline certification required at vast expense and fitting of TPWS etc.

I believe D9002 is currently mainline certified (property of the NRM) so can arrive under power at Alton and access the Watercress line using the rail connection...whether this will happen I don't know as they tend to run convoys to these events to keep movement costs down, it could be that D9002/D6700 & 47579 will be towed there by a Class 66.

Forums such as WNXX will have all the gen on movements...I daresay some of the fanatics there are discussing this in great detail already.

Not sure if related at all, but something old & dieselly looking was being hauled by truck up the hill out of Ringwood the other night, eastbound. Looked a bit like the "2A20" one on the link, unlikely I guess, as that ones from Yorkshire, but didn't really get that good a look.

If you join the 'All things New Alresford' facebook page there is notice / pictures of Engines arriving by low loader to the Watercress line as they have to close parking off in West Street to get the trailer round the corner into Station Road.

I had no idea that diesels needed their sanding gear to that extent. I used to watch what I think were class 56 engines pulling the big oil trains up Parkstone bank. You could see the sanding working then, but it's different kettle of fish with 1000 ton train.

Diesel locomotives are just as prone to slipping as steam ones are if the conditions are right.

In both cases you have a smooth wheel tyre trying to grip a smooth rail. Multiple and separate powered axles will help to some extent

Reminds me of a time I turned up from exercise on Salisbury plain quite tired to be confronted with a class 66 in the car park! All provided by GBrf for families day!

Think it's funny the people in the background just walking past with their heads in phones oblivious. If I as there I'd be thinking "whoa that's awesome" and have to stand and watch

I did half consider driving down to Sellinge a couple nights ago to see the huge transformer being delivered but my wife vetoed it hehe

Took me an hour one winters night get to from Huddesfield to Slaithwaite, got a signal check at Huddesfield so more or less standing start . Sanders not working properly about -3 after a drizzle, class 37 with 10 empty 100ton tank wagons . Eventually gave up just after Slaithwaite after waking most of the town, class 56 loco assistance came from Healey Mills . We put on a fine show once on the move again , loved every minute of it!

Drove a deltic on an experience day at the ELR. Bloody lovely. When peeps ask me what is the highest HP of any motor you have driven I reply 3,300 and watch them cream their pants wondering what beast it can have been!
