Hi everybody!
So currently I'm trying to find what car to buy for the winter. My only car now is 91 MX-5 NA and I love it but I kinda need second practical car as I will be commuting to work everyday and I think that MX5 is gonna become annoying in five-day work-run through the winter (that means sometimes so cold as -20°C (=-5°F), ice and snow). So I started searching for used practical car for about up to 4,5K$. I will be buying car probably in the UK as I know the market and their used cars are like cheapest all around and don't really mind RHD in RHT country,
What I want from it:
- practicality (what a surprise)
- good MPG (lets say no more than 33MPG=7L/100km)
- reliability
- shouldn't be really common and boring in all ways, refrigerator-feel like car (car that is just a tool, with no soul, like a white fridge)

Seems like is kinda easy to find car that is described in first three points but the last one with first three together is very difficult to find.
Good car and very reasonable in my country is Skoda Octavia II 1.9Tdi as they are made in here, every mechanic can fix them, they are pretty reliable, having very good MPG but somehow I just can't stand idea about having such a boring thing. Same with VW, oh god how much I hate the aura about VW in Europe - so many people are acting like its some masterpiece but it absolutely isn't, young boys buying poorly maintained Golfs, cutting springs a modifying it in most stupid and actually dangerous ways then trying to race you at lights in town...
I was looking at cars like E46 XXi or some Volvos or even something so unusual as Saab 9-3. But evertime I searched more informations about any of those practical non-boring cars, I find out they are unreliable and way too expensive to maintain (understand - I own Miata...).
Car doesn't need to be really fun to drive and looking beautiful, just not looking dull as Toyota Avensis second generation. I kinda want something different then everybody else in my country (so no Skoda, VW, Audi,...)

Any ideas?
