Recommend a Car! :) Hatch / Coupe / Grand Coupe - 15-18k
Discussion
Hi all, first time posting - been lurking for a few years.
Looking to replace my ageing Golf 04 Plate
Budget is anywhere upto 18k. Looking at used cars which suffered the dreaded 20-40% depreciation hits in the first 3 years of ownership - but looking to be able to get onto service plans for upto 6 years with the authorised dealers for no hassle maintenance.
Daily Commute of 50 miles (per day) - Mostly long A Roads.
Weekend family commute of 80 miles (Motorways)
AWD (Lots of 15% Hills / Bends), 50+ MPG (in real terms driving), fun to drive, comfort, Petrol & Auto - 1.6+
(November budget scares me what they could do to Diesels - I go into london frequently and im afraid they will heavily penalise the D's in the not too distant future/remove low car tax incentives)
Ideally looking at a Hatch / Coupe / GrandCoupe - but happy to defer
Had my eye on a 2014/2015 4 Series but put off by this - https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/bmw/4-series-...
Looked at VW & Audi - unfortunately they are everywhere! perhaps an AClass?
let me know!

So each of these 4 may not return the best MPG, or even anything like the quoted, they will keep any congestion and tax charges low for the foreseeable future. And would be a descent place to spend the commute each day and have lost a good chunk of their new price.
Right at the top of the budget but given a few more months or some serious haggling you may be able to get a lower mileage version than this. Seems to cover all bases and although the Golf is not the most exciting car in the world they are well put together and are a fairly nice place to be.
Golf GTE
You can go plenty cheaper than this one at £14k, would be a good choice to keep some money back in your pocket. They have been making these Hybrids for years now so should be reliable.
Toyota Auris
Pretty much Lexus version of the above. probably a nicer car.
Lexus CT200h
While not fulfilling any of your criteria I just thought it worth throwing out there.
E300H
If We forget the Hybrid shenanigans and just go with a petrol powered there are some great choices too
Now there are literally hundreds of A3's so you can be very picky over the spec you want. personally I really like the interior design. Exterior is fine too. Good resale value with an Audi and this engine is really good and a realistic high 40mpg / low 50 can be achieved.
Audi A3 1.4 TFSI Sline
2 Fords one with all the kit and one that looks sporty. In fact the later is pretty much a new car, just a year old and les than 10k on the clock. Not the prestige of the Audi and yes resale will take a hit (can always go cheaper with the focus, easily get a good one for 10k).
Focus 1.5 EcoBoost Titanium X
Focus 1.5 EcoBoost ST-Line
Ok so the MPG takes a hit but this is a lot of car for the money. You wont get nearly 40mpg combined from many other cars with 200BHP.
Kia Cee'd GT
Hope this helps a little, just one thing do not get an A Class. I would have all of the above over one, it is just not a nice car fo rthe premium they command. The Audi is leagues better if a prestige badge is what you are after. Personal preference though of course, check them out see which you feel comfortable in.

You needn't worry about the budget & diesels they will not be singled out infact the Government has made it clear that they will be allowing councils to penalise Euro4 spec cars first be they petrol or diesel then Euro5, so if you want to be sure of being clear of any future legislation for the next 10-15 years then get a Euro6 car in either form.Looking to replace my ageing Golf 04 Plate

Why AWD most modern cars are more than capable of dealing with gradients, if you want a fun car then I'd say that if you can accept 40mpg instead of 50mpg then you really do get better cars for your money.
Also on the journeys you do the GTE will give you nigh on the same fuel consumption as a GTI at which point why wouldn't you get the GTI.
