Hi folks
I'm looking for a £2500 ish golf gt tdi - there seems to be a divide of opinion about both versions.
Just wondering if anyone has any knowledge of both...
It'll be a mk 5 version I'm after
Thanks in advance
Mike

Better posting in vw section i should think, depends on agen but early 140's had porous heads and issues with turbo's if i remember rightly

Post 2006 '56' 140BHP.

There were issues with the earlier 140 models (oil pump chain?), and also later 170PD models (injectors?).

The CR170 models were good, but weren't available in the MK5 hatch iirc.

Definitely post in the VW section, there are some knowledgeable sorts there.

CR170 came in around 08/09 i think so yes i think that would be the mk6 shape, doubt it would fit your budget tbh

I'd go pd170 if you can find one in your budget, but i would go for the 1.9 PD lumps which means mk4 not 5 so not an option

From what I remember the Mk V was available with PD & CR diesels. I had a CR140 from new in 2008 - GTs came with a few freebies (e.g. leather seats) as the Mk VI was imminent. At that time DPF was optional on the 140, but standard on the 170 (at least in the UK).

Mk 5 GT TDI available in both 140 and 170 BHP. Both PD. CR versions did not arrive until MK 6 in late 2008. I have a MK 5 170 (since new) and yes they do have their 'issues'.
The injector issue should have been sorted out under recall but all the 2.0 PD models will eventually suffer from the dreaded Dual Mass Flywheel problem. When mine went at 86K, inspection of the clutch showed little or no wear but the DMF was completely fubarred! The 140 model also has this problem.
Yes there are also issues with the turbo. Usually due to poor servicing and catastrophically so if you use the wrong oil! Regular oil changes (every 10K or twelve months) will ensure longevity but check service history.....if in doubt walk away....there are plenty about, both 140 and 170.
Also these are NOT cars for short trips. Unless you can give the car a long high speed run frequently you WILL encounter DPF problems!
All the 2008 rollout 170 PDs were given 'free' leather prior to the introduction of the MK 6s. Mine's fully loaded with Xeons and these are a must have IMHO.
You'll be lucky to get a 170 with £2.5K, unless starship mileage or poor condition.
Personally I'd go for a 1.9PD (yes I know Mk 4) as these are bullet proof and will do starship mileages without issue (my mechanic has two with over 250K miles!)
Performance in the 170 is not so significant over the 140 (I've driven both at length) and frankly not worth any extra cash.
There are much better cars at your price range IMHO......less trouble!
Having said that I love mine!!
Good luck with your search!

Try and squeeze into an early Mk6 with the CR140 if you can, it's such a nice engine compared to its PD predecessors from the Mk5. The 170 from that era was particularly rough and seemed to suffer DPF issues.

E.g. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017... would certainly retain the extra few hundred when you come to sell it on or A3s with the same engine seem cheaper e.g. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

Thanks folks - they do seem rather problematic and after replacing the clutch and dual mass flywheel on t'other car last month (an f10 BMW - proper drama queen / money pit) I don't want to do it again - hmm - wonder what else is about for 2.5k....:
