So whenever I 'check out' the sale prices it seems there are 2 - £18k private sale or £30k trade. That's a bit simplistic I know but what does it take for one car to be worth almost double the cost of another the same make/model/age.

I suppose my questions are - Are the dealers making these cars concours? How much money could you reasonably spend on a refurb and expect to get it back in the value of the car ?

The price Private price is probably the realistic value, I can't imagine the dealers doing a lot to the car's to enhance their condition else it would affect their profit margins too much - Not forgetting if the dealers are spending money doing it up, then it must have been in poor condition when they purchased it.

The reason why I say this from a past experiance, where I advertised my car for £12k (the car was in perfect condition) - no responce PRIVATELY, then a price of £10.5 ( I was happy at that - since I needed to move on) was agreed by a Dealer and 4 Days later it was on their forecourt for just under £19k. No need to say any more, bar the fact that Warranties and Finance Options throw weight to Sales.

As far as Refurbishing goes, where do you start and stop - New Chassis, New Interior, New Paint, Suspension. The costs are endless!

Would you get the FULL Return of your investment, perhaps not in the short term but that would be reliant on market Values. The real benefit from a Full Refurbishment is the knowledge that nothing should go wrong and the car is in absolutley Pristine Condition/Like NEW.

I personally prefer to buy Privately, since you can see where the car is kept and how it's been driven by the current owner not forgetting it's condition prior to be buffed up and covered in dark waxoyl.

Buyer beware whichever route you take.
