Do you get them ? and do you have any strategies for coping ? and good hangover stories ?

It is weird, sometimes can have a few beers at home and feel utterly wretched the following day, then like last night, went out and had a fair few, lost count and am full of the joys of spring, how does that work ?

Have you ever had one that was compounded by what you did the night before, those are the best ones, you feel dreadful and someone texts you to remind you of your antics or you get the memories, or you remember the messages you sent biggrin

For me, I know that when I get drunk and I'm having a great time, I also get a runaway effect where I also think it's great to try different drinks / cocktails. Usually means I'll feel "fine" during the night, but the next morning its like hell.

Drinking is great, I love a cold crisp beer and a good whisky, but it's definitely a weigh-up on whether I can be bothered with a headache or a hangover the next morning. I'm starting a new job soon which involves sales and a bit of networking. Sales and networking usually means drinking and I wonder sometimes if I can be bothered!

I've trained myself well to have a lemsip before bed (don't have it hot, just drink a glass of it in cold water - it's a quick way of getting 1000mg of paracetamol into you very quickly), and the next morning it's usually a hot shower, cup of tea and a good fry up.

I like a beer or eight and find the best way to avoid a hangover is to stick to one drink! I try not to mix beer with wine or any sparkling wine, if I have spirits I try not to drink to much whisky, and steer clear of tonic water as it always gives me a killer headache.

What Leigh said - don't mix them!!

I had a really heavy one with some old school mates on Friday and I'm pretty sure a decent paramedic would've declared me dead at certain points of yesterday. I stayed on ale all night, until one of the idiots I was with brought back some sambuca from the bar, bad times.

Got sent this from one of the guys I was with along with the message "wtf did we do last night?". This is the house of one of the blokes we were with

ETA - The closure on spring road is a good mile from here and is not on any route we would've walked home. No idea how we got it there. Or even if we did.

If I know I'm going to go out and have a few then I'll have plenty of water during the day. What works for me the morning after is..........flat Coca-Cola.

Age, as with many things, isn't kind when it comes to hangovers.

I used to be bulletproof, now it can be a few days until I fully shake a decent session.

I get bad hangovers. It's the sickness that is the most frustrating element about them really.

I find the best cure for me is cold fresh air.

Talking of flat cola - I went to a house party years a go in school and got absolutely walloped. Getting up and knowing (as you do) that fizzy drinks settle the stomach I poured and drank a glass of cola. When I threw it up about .5s later it fizzed just like when you pour it into a glass.

Drink LOTS of water before you go to bed. It's dehydration that causes the worse effects of a hangover. When you wake up drink more water - with Ipruprofen if it's a thumper.

Not mixing (as stated) is the best way to avoid (apart from not drinking too much!)

Careful with that! Alcohol and paracetamol aren’t great for the liver, even the morning after.

I try not to get battered if I have to be remotely constructive the next day. Five or six pints is fine but a heavy night needs sleeping off. I find a Diaralyte sachet and a pint of water before bed helps massively and a bacon sandwich in the morning.

I'd agree with this 100%.

In my 20s I could go out Thursday, Friday & Saturday nights & function perfectly well.

Now in my 40s, if I go out Friday night, I can still be feeling a bit off Monday eveninglaugh

Mine got worse in my 30s and then less bad now I'm in my 40s. I get worse ones from a few quick drinks on a school night than from a marathon weekend session, for sure.

Ceasing drinking at least an hour before sleeping, and getting some water down your neck before bed is the biggest influence - this is the origin of the idea that it was "the last drink that gave me the hangover".

I find small amounts of aspirin very effective the next day.

We tend to go straight to the pub and have a few on a Friday night, then home for dinner. I have some kind of snack before we go out, like beans on toast, makes a huge difference.

Obviously a pint of water before sleep but for me ice cold coca cola and some Rennie the next day sort me out quite sharpish.

I get an annoying by product of drinking which is incurable hiccups for hours on end the next day, those deep stomach churning ones.

The water from fresh young thai coconuts is the best cure I've found. That and coupled with laying about poolside helps! biggrin

But honestly, if it's a bad one it's only time that will truly shift it. The addition of "stuff" just mitigates the effects somewhat. (that includes more alcohol)

The best and only real cure for a hangover is a beer. A hangover is effectively your body reacting to not having any alcohol. It's withdrawal.

It's seldom I ever have a hangover but I went to a Polish wedding a couple of years ago. These are 3 day sessions and not something I'm at all accustomed to. Day 2 my friend went to the local shop at 9.30 in the morning and for a few bottles of pilsner. Went from feeling like death to relatively normal in 15 minutes. Had to hold my nose to drink it though!

People forget that alcohol is a drug and to keep some kind of normal function a managed withdrawal is always better than cold turkey. Alcoholics can die from abruptly stopping drinking.

The thing I always used to find annoying about 'the drink' was that I'd generally generally wake up stupidly early needing a pee and would feel awful, but would be unable to get back to sleep because I felt so rotten.

I found that getting as little as 30mins sleep would be enough to snap me out of a hangover. (That and a full English & a bucket of decent coffee & ibuprofen).

Nowadays I don't really drink so wake up every morning on a cloud of smugness, except I have on occasion felt rough after a night on the tiles even when I wasn't drinking.

How long before one of PH's handful of sanctimonious teetotallers arrives to tell us we are all wrong?
