This interests me as well. I thought a side exit exhaust had to exit behind the rear of the door/s for it to be legal but I saw a pic of the mclaren merc and I'm sure it had an exhaust exiting in front of the drivers door? Was I mistaken?

Bib, any comments?

Cobra kit cars have these exhausts fitted, also I have seen some Renault rally cars with them so surely they must pass some regs.

The mclaren merc's exausts are in behind the front wheels. There are a number of cars which have side exausts on the market but they are mainly track day cars e.g Caterham's.

AFAIK, it is illegal for a side exit exhaust to the nearside of the road. ie the pavement/LHS side of the car.

Wouldnt a flamer kit work well there for pedestrians !

Heck, they must be very short then.

Stevie, that's interesting. I wonder how that applies to the saggy, mind you the gas will be a bit cooler that far back.

Whats a saggy ???

IIRC, when the Dodge Viper first came to the UK, the US version had side exit pipes.

The UK version had to have rear exit pipes before they could sell it.

Anyone know a MOT tester? They must have guidelines on side exit exhausts.

I spoke to a bloke from UK MOT www.ukmot.com, who informed me, that provided the system meets the emmision/noise regs. applicable to the age of the car, there should be no problems. Doesn't matter which side they exit from either.
He did suggest phoning the Test station that you would be using, as the Tester might not be as "sensible" as others, but he said that as a few classics (Mustangs,Cobras etc.) have this system, he could not foresee why anyone would be awkward.
I'm sure all of us who have watched V8 Supercars must have thought about this mod. Quite a bit of work to do modifying the sills & filling in the rear valence though, but it would look good.

Yeah I checked that manual out, which is why I phoned to see if anyone had any further info. Don't appear to be any legal issues.
The spintech (search under spintech mufflers in google)side exit system, exits under the sill. I would prefer the race car style, where the exit is in the sill itself. Anything is poss. if you are prepared to pay the price.
Modifying the sill/s shouldn't be too hard, but the rear valance would be tricky to fill.
Wonder if you can get any parts from Aus.?

I'm also pretty sure I read somewhere, that any deviation from the manufacturers standard, is also illegal.

Its just never enforced.

There are rules for selling brand new cars because of type approval etc. Once you own a car you may do want you like, provided it meets the various laws on safety/emmissions etc. & you have valid insurance.
Any changes to safety features such as airbags could negate any claim against a manufacturer.
Side exiting exhausts shouldn't cause any concerns, but you should always check first with your insurance co.

There's a 3rd gen Firebird in the UK with side exits and it's a desirable thing on a live axled car with limited clearance over the axle. However, the problem is often having to raise the rear to accommodate the clearance problems associated with having either a silencer or low pipework within the wheelbase as they catch on speed humps.

Remember the system has to hang on rubbers if it's not to break. I think the reasons are therefore practical. I believe the new F150 has a side-exit but that doesn't have clearance issues.
