I did that classic thing of buying something and having a newer better version announced one week later - most irritating. It's a GoPro 5 and I deliberately went for the highest spec version as wanted the best quality possible. From looking at reviews, it seems the new 6 is a usefully better camera (better stabilisation, better dynamic range, etc).

The thing is, I've used it twice, although I still have all the packaging and it is in perfect condition.

Amazon's returns policy says I can return it within 30 days - but is that still true if I've unboxed and used it? (I've never wanted to return anything before so no experience of this).

Because he's used it. The law wasn't brought in so you could buy something online, use it & then send it back. If it was an item of clothing & had been worn twice do you think it would be ok to send it back?

OP: do you have any moral issues with ripping off Amazon? If not, send it back.

Amazon won't care - they'll just return it to GoPro.

Morally, you have to keep it.

  • You knew what you were ordering
  • You accepted the price it was being sold at
  • What you ordered was delivered at expected
  • You had no complaints upon delivery
  • You used the item multiple times
If you really want the newest version, put your current version for sale on eBay and put the money towards the new one.

I'm not sure how this is even a question.

Why doesn't the OP simply ask Amazon the same question?

Because he knows what they'll say.

If it was the local high street shop I might have a different view on returning it. But if it was the local high street shop they may have said to me 'you might want to hang on, there's a new one out in a couple of days...'

Sadly there is no local high street shop selling Go Pros so I'm stuck with Amazon who clearly aren't going to bother with anything like personal service so no, actually I don't have a 'moral issue' with sending it back. Impersonally is how they operate - it's a monolithic selling machine and the return of used items will have been figured in to the business algorithms.

I've bought plenty from them so I'm happy for them to suck this one back into the machine and spit me out a more expensive one.

I don't see why a post on here was necessary.

Why not just try it?

Like posting up "Will Sainsburys let me return this packet of crisps I've already opened?"

Because it's a complete waste of time going to the trouble of returning it if it just gets rejected because it's been opened. So on the basis that there's a reasonable chance other people have returned opened goods to Amazon, I thought I'd ask how they got on first.

(Is this stuff really so hard to understand? biggrin )

Nope, they pass any losses back to the suppliers (see some of the threads on here about selling on ebay/Amazon).

Never mind, you bask in the warmth of your justification as you wrap it up to send it back.

I would say no, although I wonder what the return options are for a device like this?

In reality you didn't do your research and noticed there a is a new version out so stick this on ebay, and then buy a new one.

There's a clear sticky circle thing that I had to cut so it'll be very obvious that it has been opened.

It is hard to understand.
Since none of us work for Amazon, none of us know what their exact policy is? It may well vary for different goods / value etc.

I doubt that anyone else on PH have ever bought something, opened it, used it, realised a week later that a new version has come out and then tried to send it back.

I'd be astonished if no one had ever bought something, opened it, and then decided to return it.

Hilarious isn't it? You'd think I was asking for advice on child molestation! laugh

Amazon are entirely entitled to reject my return if they so wish, which I'm totally aware of.

My question is very simply, will they?
