Fellow enthusiasts,

I’ve owned and driven some fairly quick cars in the past and I’m considering buying the first shape Audi R8 v10 plus.

I’ve seen the usual buyers guides and am left wanting more… so I want to hear from any owners / those who know what to look out for when buying one and any tips that can help me along the way. Any info would be well received.

Thanks, Kb

There is also a "V8 to V10 Plus" thread on here from a few days ago too - might give you some more info

That was mine. I’ve not picked the car up yet, so can’t comment much. 2013 car, Ibis white, sport seats, 18k mikes, £75k, and I traded my 2009 V8 in for it.

As per the other thread, it just felt a bit nicer everywhere, so I decided to switch. It was on a complete whim, I was coming home from picking up the M3.

I’ve a tiny little bit of buyers remorse, as I never thought I’d sell the older car, and it is still genuinely immaculate, but the deal’s done now.

Thanks guys, lots of useful info on R8Talk... managed to pick up a 14 plate and it's lovely to drive. I’m surprised how usable it is, the only thing I’m slightly struggling with is width restrictions. Overall I’m a very happy boy.

I’ve never got comfortable with width restrictions. It’s not that it’s a particularly wide car, it’s more that I’ve never got the feeling for exactly where the wheels are relative to me.

Have you considered crimping the suction tubes to keep the exhaust valves open? Cold start up sounds great but wonder if it will get on my nerves after a while.

Cant comment on Gen 1 details, but the gen 2 is a very enjoyable car to drive. Came from an f80 M3 and the difference is the R8 is much more precise and has much more stage presence.

Depends what you are looking for - if you want a race car for the road, the R8 does that. But in my experience the R8 is not a long drive gt car.

Am curious - is there anything that does what the R8 does that is a better long drive car?

I've only had my R8 a couple of weeks, so still getting familiar with how it drives and feels on the road. It's much, much more communicative with what is going on than anything I've owned before, which I find absolutely brilliant for a spirited drive, but it does make me feel like I need to be a bit more focused when driving it. So I can imagine for long journeys it could be a little more tiring.

I guess it depends upon what you're used to. I came out of a Cayman S into my R8 and both cars communicate well so you are never fully relaxed, but you wouldn't want a 'limo' type of feel in a car of this nature. I drove my R8 home the day I purchased it 350 miles straight and certainly didn't feel any the worst for it.

I don’t agree on the second point. I far preferred my V8 to my C63 on a long drive. I even prefer my harsher V10 Plus to my F80 M3.

I presume you mean r8 not v8?

My F80 M3 was much easier on a long drive. You set up an M button for soft everything and off you go. Now the R8, just from the attention I seem to constantly get if not the constant desire to hear the engine rev, empties my adrenal glands after a few hours. Its tiring over longer distances - but for the right reasons. Its exciting.

To NewName's point, a few cars ago I had a 640d and was toying with the idea of an M6. Now that (the M6) was a gt fast car with 600 bhp that would offer similar feel to the R8 but in a more refined softer package (not to mention cheaper).

No, my V8 R8, rather than the current one, my V10 R8 Plus. Firmer suspension than the V8, but still my preferred car for long distances over the F80 M3.

I don’t agree that an M6 feels anything like an R8 either, by the way. It’s so different that I honestly wonder if you are trying to make a joke at this point. It’s taller, has a vastly different polar moment of inertia, has a turbo-charged engine, and is far larger. The seats are higher, and far less supportive in the bends.

The question on the M6 was not a comparison of the two cars. You are vastly widening the question that was asked into a direct car comparison or you are missing the point. The question is there a car that does a long drive that does what the R8 does but with more comfort and less drama. i.e. motorway driving. Im not suggesting the 6 series feels like the R8 or drives in the same way. But for bland motorway driving in a straight line in a car with huge power reserves, in these simplistic terms they both offer this. In all other ways, obviously very different vehicles and my point was not a comparison of the two.

UK owners we've started up a specific UK fb group for meets and events as there was nothing in the UK for us. Quite a few planned outings next year and a bit of specific R8 chat hopefully as the American forum is obviously very biased to their needs.

My original deal with the other after was she/we get a new house that she decorates, I get a car - last September we moved and in December took ownership of my R8.

The current deal on the table that I "negotiated" is she gets a new kitchen and en-suite bathroom, I get a car upgraded!

Like your powers of negotiation, Reece. cool
