After an unsuccessful search of past threads, I’m after some help.

I recently purchased a 964 C4, that has just had an engine re-build including RS Flywheel and clutch.

Most of the time on starting, the starter motor spins up but there’s a graunching noise as if the solenoid is not fully engaged in the starter wheel.

Does anyone have an option that the starter motor would benefit from removal, lubrication and replacement, or would a replacement unit be the better solution.

Many Thanks

Maybe...the solenoid may be faulty and they are not available as a seperate unit.either replce the whole thing (i did) or get an autoelectrician to try and refurb the solenoid if it needs it....I fitted my new starter to my 993, when the gearbox case was split apart to fit a new clutch/flywheel.....it maybe possible with g/box in place...but I would expect the swear box to be full afterwards.

Try a search on Rennlist, that subject came up very recently, there are a few tips/links about replacement....I tried to take mine off, but I found it pretty tight around there on a C2.

I have posted a very full reply to this very problem on 964 smartgroup. Basically on my starter motor the shaft had become gummed up over time causing it to stick when being thrown out to meet the flywheel. repair is simply clean and lightly grease the shaft and refit. The hard bit is getting the damn thing out in the first place. try John miles 964 site as I think it has a full description of how to remove the starter motor on there i always get this wrong but it's either
www.porsche964.co.uk or www.964porsche.co.uk both web sites have 964's on but Johns front page is red in color.
