We've been asked to collect a deceased customers car and take it to a local scrapyard in the UK.

Its a '95 Audi A3, still MOT'd, starts and drives well but with a knock on every corner.

We have the V5C (obviously in deceased's name) but will there be a problem in collecting the (pitiful) weigh-in value of the car ?

What are the latest rules ?

We doing as a favour really but hope to get a bit from the scrap man for a round cakes.

Thx

Just make sure the person asking is the executor or authorised person and that your instructions are in writing and you'll be fine.

If fit runs, MOTd, etc, why is the estate scrapping it? Sounds like they aren't getting best value...

This. The executor has a duty to obtain the best result for the deceased's estate.

On the other hand there is no liability to those collecting it if they are acting on direction from the executor.

Just sounds odd.

OP. Why not offer scrap value and then sell it? If it's running you are bound to get someone buying it is as winter station car for £200?

If the family just want it scrapping you can do it no problem. It doesn't matter what name is on the V5 just take it along your ID (drivers licence or passport with proof of address) and you'll be fine.

Thanks for the responses.

The car really isn't that pretty, there are several looking better on Ebay for 99p.

I'll pass your comments on to the chief.

Surely it would cost them £80 to scrap it, so why not just give them £80 and spend a few quid on it then move it on for a profit.

Id ebay it, with MOT you will get £200 - £500, cant see it being worth much scrap

Heck ive sold an old Audi with no MOT for £400

I have known of people who have scrapped cars because they don't want to spot it running around with someone else driving it (I know, I know...) so that may be at play here too.

So they sell it to the scrap yard, and transfer the V5C... then look surprised when the scrap man's made a profit on it by turning it round rather than putting it through Certif of Destruction etc...

Just asking for a copy of the COD at the time of scrapping solves that problem.

"We're busy at the moment - but we'll do it when we get round to it, and post you a copy..."

It takes less than a minute to do online. I'd not scrap it there if they couldn't find that time for a customer.

Many people couldn't be bothered with the hassle, and unlikely to be a good idea for the OP if it's a business doing it.

Ask for a certificate of destruction, the scrap man will pay by cheque or bank transfer.
Many executors don't want the hassle of trying to sell low value second hand cars , most will sell to a garage or put them through the local auction if they are of a reasonable value .

Put it on eBay with a genuine description some realistic photos 7 day auction £1 start price no reserve set auction to end at a sensible time like 8pm and see what you get will be a
Lot more than scrap.

We just sold scruffy 2003 3 series with no mot on 200,000 miles and needing a fair bit for the mot fail and it made over £500. So it's worth a try if it drives ok.
