WHO'S SELLING ??
Discussion
Hi all, those of you who have been following the last few days events will know I've passed the S on to Mr and Mrs CarZee, and the Puma is up for sale too...
..this is going to yield me enough to buy an early(ish) 4.3 or HC 4.0. I've been told the standard 4.0 will not really give me massses more performance than the S so I'm not convinced on this one.. can anyone confirm/deny this for me..
Either way, have been through the classifieds and seen a few cars in there (owners contacted) but if any of you have something that might be going onto the market, or has been on for a while and you're thinking of accepting a lower offer than you are asking let me know..
Lead me to your cars..
Cheers
Matt.

Just a personal opinion
I think you'll find that a sorted 4.0 Chimaera (Mark Adams tuned??) will be quite a bit quicker than the S.
I personally would buy on condition and not worry too much about the motor.
There a quick and slow versions of all TVRs engines (lets not start it says 285bhp on the tin but I only have 46 at the wheels threads again).
I have driven both 4.0 and 4.0HCs (not much difference), been in 4.3s and owned a Griffith 500. The 4.3 felt just as fast as the Griff500, but not as smooth but more vocal.
If you limit your choices to 4.0HCs and 4.3s, you will significantly reduce the number of cars that you could buy. Don't rule out the 4.0, definitely buy on condition.

PS I don't have one for sale (or even own one)

Davidy, thanks for the advice.. there are LOADS of 4.0's around it seems.. I'm sure I'll have to consider them as an option if I can't find a decent 4.3.. I suppose its just a case of seeing what is around on the market at the moment.
100% agree on condition, thats why I didn't list 4.5's or 5.0's as one of them at my money would proably have been to the moon and back and have the scars to prove it..
Cheers,
Matt.

M@H, I have a 94 L 4.3, and I have to say that the performance difference is WELL worth it. Extensively test drove 4.0's before buying the 430 March 99. Bl00dy hell is it quick. Recommend non-PAS as well - steering feel is soooo much better, being a bloke means you can park without it
. As said condition is all, but you'll know this from your S.
PS I'm selling fairly soon (as soon as I have the folding for a Cerb).... so if you can wait....

Have a 4.0HC and would concur with this - there really isnt much in it between a HC and a "normal" one. Did get to run against a 4.0 at Duxford the other month and I did gain on it in front - but only slowly. Which does indicate that I have a little more power, but not a lot (240 vs 275). But I do have a little more torque which is nice in standard traffic. But hey, lets be honest here - can I really tell the difference? Probably not.
Never driven a 4.3 so cant comment but did get well and truely blown away by a 5.0 - which does indicate that they are SIGNIFICANTLY faster than any 4.0 variant.
Cheers,
Paul
M&H - see 10K Chim topic. I particularly wanted a 4.3 (may have considered a 4.0HC though) because they didn't make many and I wanted something different. Also coming from a 4.0 wedge I thought I could use the extra horses. But do I? - hardly ever. You will pay a premium for a 4.3 (maybe a little extra for a HC too) but if money is tight I'm positive there will be more 4.0's to choose from - and save 2 or 3 grand!

As you know recently parted with my S, and bought a 4 litre Chimaera. Similar to you was set on getting a 4.5.Went to view a number of them, some one owner low milage cars. It was sad to see some of these were in a poor state, and required a few pounds to get them up to scratch, even though they were priced to the top end of the scale. I found looking for a 4.5, in a colour combination I wanted reduced the options no end that were open to me, so decided to look at the 4 litre to give me more scope. Was happy with what I ended up with, condition price and colour, with regards to power, I find there is far more go in it than the S IMHO, and am more than happy with it.

Drove a 500 the other weekend. Difference in power at the bottom end of revs, not a shopping trolley!!
My 4 (I thought it 'felt' fast, TVR did a few 400's with 250BHP) will eventually be 4.6 with shiney bits and stuff, and I'm aiming for 400 BHP...
There's a very slight difference between 4's and 4.3's but having said that, there are very slight differences between 4's and 4's!! Each one is different.
Just drive as many as you can, you'll buy the one that feels right!!

Obviously it varies from car to car but my 4.3 overtook lots of Chimaeras (presumably 4ltr) at Duxford. One nice lady passenger of a car that was easily beaten even asked if my car was a 4.5 or a 5ltr, althought there is a clue in my numberplate!

I don't use mine every day. I'm one of those 'fair weather' owners. As it's my pride and [occasional] joy toy I wanted it to be as near mint as I could get. For me taking it out is an event not just another journey. I go out just for the sake of it not to go anywhere !. So I wanted it to be perfect.
If I were using it every day Summer & Winter and not garaging it I'd be less worried about it being mint and more inclined to buy a higher mileage less tidy one for less money as I'd need a budget for repairs etc that higher mileage / harder use would probably bring.
It's a shame to buy a dry mile minter and then subject it to supermarket car parks, salty roads, motorways etc. It'd all take it's toll but on a 'well used' one it wouldn't show so much would it ?
Maybe owners fall into two camps then ?. The pride and joy occasional toy camp and the use every day come sun, rain, hail or snow camp ?.

M@H,
You've just gotta drive as many as you can, of all variants really.
If your budget is dictating 4.3 or 4.0 then it'll come down to the individual car and it's condition v price. I don't think there's a lot between a 4.0, 4.0HC and a 4.3 to be honest.
I could say try and get a serpentine engine and the later gearbox but then there's plenty of owners of pre-serp cars on here that are doin' just dandy. Just get the best you can for your money – since I can't believe you're gonna drive it flat out on the road much (if at all), who cares about fractions of a second 0-60?
You'll see off practically anything else anyway ... and for me the most fun is had at over three figures
as you accelerate at 100mph leaving the reps cars in your wake.
