I took my M12 GTO3 to have a new battery fitted. Apparently the ECU is an old type that is being replaced free of charged. It is a metal cased one. Has anyone else had this done on theirs ?
What difference did it make to the cars running, performance, if any ?

Thanks

It will only make a difference if you didn't have the latest map in your current ECU. Both ECU's are MBE units, the black plastic cased one is just a later version which is being offered as a free upgrade.

Do you know what the change is? Switching from a metal to plastic chasis doesn't seem much of an upgrade, and the Noble engine bay isn't the most hospitable place!

You'll be pleased to know that most "mil-spec" systems I've worked on come covered in plastic.

It's actually a better packaging as it provides both heat and vibration insulation, metal cases have a nasty habit of making micro-stress fractures worse on PCBs.

I'd always consider a plastic box for an embedded ECU an "upgrade" (and I used to design the odd system that had to withstand 9G+ of acceleration )

I wonder if it's got upgraded security - i.e. more difficult to re-map etc.

Not really, apparently very few are affected so you should be fine.
