What Audi Diesel engine do I want?
Discussion
I am looking for new car for my wife
i think a BMW 530d would be the perfect family car, but she is keen on an Audi A6. Ideally I would like the 3.0 litre engine, but not sure whether to discount the 2.7 and 2.0 engines
I want over 200bhp, and notice that the 2.0 comes in a range of powers, can this engine safely be mapped to over 200bhp? or should I hold out for the 3.0?
Anything else I should be aware of?

What age of car? Budget?
Nearly new/new? then get the 3.0 bi-tdi.
Used and out of warranty? I'd be wary of the 3.0 as I know two people who've had cam chains go in the last year. Engine out job with a huge bill. I'd spend my own (small pot of) cash on a 2.0 and map it.
Not as good as the 3.0 but easier to run/maintain.

I looked at this a short time back and was very keen on the 3.0. However, due to the torque of the engine, it only comes with an auto box. The 2.0 comes auto or manual.
I didn't go any further with any purchase, but the 3.0 would be preferable, IMO.
I'm sure my mate has a manual 3.0 In his A5. Is it just the bigger models that they don't have a manual option? I didn't go any further with any purchase, but the 3.0 would be preferable, IMO.
the difference between the two engines is that the 2.7 engine is only fitted to the FWD version of the A6 & the 3.0 (with 55bhp more) is for the 4wd version, unless you're looking for AWD in particular then the 2.7 will be fine.

The car has to be a manual
There are 3.0 manual A6’s out there
As above go for the 3.0TDI. At this age a none M sport / Sline will maybe your best option. Although a LeMan a6 3.0 Quattro would be worth looking at as these are great cars. There are 3.0 manual A6’s out there
Early A6 3.0tdi's can be found in manuals. But clutches go around 50-70K miles due the high torque . Stick to Auto's at this Torque level.

Isn't there a difference in gearbox ? I understood the 2.7 has the CVT, the 3.0 a normal auto. The CVT is supposed to be really unreliable.
