I left a deposit on this E92 Competition Pack yesterday, lovely car/spec and it's got a manual gearbox too; which I've been trying to find for quite a while now!!

Getting rid of my Golf R was a very big decision for me but after owning it for over two and a half years I think it's probably time for a change.

I can't wait to pick the M3 up once my numberplate has been transferred over!

Ah, Leven Car Company. Was just looking at that on their website at the weekend. Lovely! I pass the showroom on the way to work, always have a look in the window.

Can't decide if I like the 2012 Japan Red M3 they also have in stock. I'm in fairly similar situation to you, currently have a 2014 S3 but no longer need 5 doors but can't decide what to change it for. Contemplating an E92 M3, Cayman, C63 or M4.

Were they good to deal with? They seem to be turning over stock quickly recently. Always got loads of interesting stuff, plenty of variety.

It looks superb! Can't help but think that the Competition wheels are one of the best designs BMW ever came up with! Is the colour Space Grey?

Interested to know how you get on with the manual gearbox, I thought the DCT was extremely well-suited to the engine, but understand the allure of a manual for that additional tactile interaction with the car.

And btw, get that 2 pipe mod done, it makes the car cloud9

I was looking at this at the weekend too! Stumbled across it via You Tube.

Space Grey Comp Pack, my personal favourite seems quite rare on the used market, they all seem to be of the frozen variety.

Very jealous. Congrats looking stunning and a fine example.

That is a stunner. I spent quite a few months looking out for a manual comp pack and didn't see a single one come up for sale. And you found one in the best colour. Congratulations

Thanks guys the car is great, drove very well with no squeaks or rattles and pulled really well, if a little quiet, however I'm sure that can be sorted easily with a 2 or 2.5 pipe exhaust mod! Although I'm thinking that a replacement (Milltek possibly) might be better and allow me to leave the standard kit untouched.. which I'm sure is rare these days!!

It is a bit of a unicorn being an LCI, Comp Pack, not White/Black, low miles, full BMW history and a manual gearbox too.. I asked on a Comp Pack thread here in March this year whether any manuals were available but got told that they're pretty thin on the ground and this is only the second I've seen for sale since then. Here is the video that the dealership made of the car:

https://youtu.be/tv0wnU-M4M0

It's also got extended leather, which to be honest I wouldn't have considered specifying myself (specially given the cost) from new, but it really does make a difference to the interior and sets it apart from a lot of other cars so I'm very glad it's got it.

Re: the dealership, I wasn't sure what to expect given they are an Aston Martin/Rolls Royce dealership but they're really down to earth guys and have been very accommodating regarding my slightly OCD approach to cars and preparation. It's a nice change from getting the standard 'it's not a new car mate, you've got to expect X, Y, Z' that a lot of dealers will spew out when looking at a used car.

Although I've not had a proper look round the Japan Red M3, from my brief wander round it, the car looks fantastic and if it was a manual gearbox then I'd have had a very difficult choice to make between them both! If you would like a contact name at the dealership then fire me a PM and I'll give you his details/let him know you'll be in touch.

Congratulations, very nice indeed.

I too was looking at this, but my preference is white. Strangely it was for sale a few weeks back, disappeared quickly and re-surfaced over the weekend I think.

As you say it's a very rare beast; LCI, comp pack and manual.

Interestingly enough I was talking to a couple of E92 owners over the summer at a meet and one stated that there was no such thing as a manual with comp pack (as far as he was aware), he thought they were all 'fakes', yet I nearly bought one earlier in the year from a main stealer.

As you say the extended leather is a rare extra, not sure on cost, but does look cracking, and the red really lifts it from the usual dull black in my eyes.

The competition pack was an option that could be specified on both manual and DCT cars.

Completely agree about the extended leather, makes a huge difference in lifting it from "ordinary" E92 to something more befitting an M3.

Fantastic car!

Manuals are rare. But having owned one I can see why. I sold mine after a couple of months an bought a DCT. I found the manual to be notchy and much too long a throw. Really didn't suit my car.

That's great to hear, thanks for that.

It's a little early for me at the moment, I need to get shot of the S3 first - likely early December, and then I will look in earnest very early in the new year. Wife is slowly coming round to the idea too. No harm in browsing/looking/dreaming now though!

Enjoy the car - it is a beaut!

Congratulations - you have a very rare car.

I also have a comp pack lci, manual and emailed BMW U.K. A few months ago to confirm how many were sold. 22 is the answer!

Yes the gearbox isn't the best but the harder you're driving the better it gets. Plus the level of interaction is huge compared to dct.
The satisfaction of heel toeing and the shift from 3rd as you redline changing to 4th is unforgettable.

Thanks for sharing that statistic.
I wonder how many of the other 20 are still alive ??

Well that's 3 of the 22 accounted for, as I have one, too).

And to the OP - do the F10 M5 manual gear lever swap. Shorter, weighted lever/knob and much nicer to look at.

Makes a huge difference to the feel of the change.

Re: The Great 6MT vs DCT Debate, I was expecting the odd shift quality/'picked the wrong box' comment and I absolutely agree that it's not as good as one may expect from a BMW M Car; similar to when I bought my E46 M3 and discovered the shift quality was pretty poor. However I know that switching to an F10 M5 gearknob will make a positive difference and once the exchange rates pick up (or should that be IF?!) then I'm almost certain that I'll buy an AS Short Shift kit for the car, which eliminates any sloppiness and reduces the throw too.

I am a diehard manual man and although I know that the DSG/DCT/S-Tronic boxes are fantastic pieces of kit: faster, more economical, lightning shift speeds, etc... they all remove a vital piece of interaction from the driving experience. In addition to the fact that my car is only ever going to be used as a weekend car in NE Scotland and as such will almost never encounter stop-start traffic, there's really no need for me to have an automatic. If I was using this as a daily driver in an area where I suffered prelonged stop-start jams on a regular basis then I would absolutely consider going for the automatic version of a car, in fact it would probably be a no-brainer decision.

I knew the car was quite a rare beast but didn't realise it was one of 22 cars, that's pretty special. I might try and get a confirmation/copy of that from BMW UK myself for the history file on the car... I know, I know, it's pretty sad and beard-like but I do like to keep a comprehensive history file on my cars. smile

No problem, I wasn't actually expecting to 1: find something suitable anytime soon, or 2: get rid of my Golf before at least Spring time next year.. but after keeping an eye on the market for the past 6-9 months and seeing very little that interested me anywhere in the UK, when I saw this one then I knew that it was worth shifting my timeline a little. That said, the hunt for a DCT car would be a whole lot easier I think, so it won't force your hand as much as mine was!! laugh

~Edit~ ...regarding the performance of the M3 vs the R, it's a tough one to call just now given I've not picked up/lived with the M3. The Golf is an extremely impressive point to point car with c370bhp, despite it's manual gearbox! wink I'm not actually sure that the BMW will be much/if any faster than the Golf in the real world where the '4WD' and turbo torque really help punch you out of corners; plus the Golf is lighter and has a better gearshift as standard. I'd assume that if at all, it'll probably only be when speeds stop earning you points and start earning you months that the BMW will start to pull away.

Worth getting the engine management software updated to the final release,

Mine feels much stronger at the top end, more responsive at part throttle, and is using around 10% less fuel - getting over 25mpg on a typical long run. On a 110 mile trip recently I got something ludicrous like 31mpg, thanks to the M3/M25 works and their 50mph limits in the middle of the journey.

31 mpg is indeed ludicrous from a manual s65.

Well done Mr B!

Sounds great Tony, is there a version number I can look for/way of checking my car to see what it's running currently? I assume it's a dealer-only job?
