I have a Japanese client resident in Japan who wants to open an account here.
Facilities on the account should include a credit/debit card, ability to make transfers to UK and USA companies.

So far most of the banks I have contacted require he is a resident of UK, C.I. or IOM, which obviously he is not.

The regular high street banks cannot help.
I've googled without success.

Any suggestions.

Barclays or HSBC might do something

Thanks smile for the suggestion but already found that. The bba is probably well meaning but the those banks have eligibilty requirements :
HSBC "To hold an active HSBC current account (excluding Basic Bank Account and Student Bank Account)
Be a resident of the UK (excluding Channel Islands and Isle of Man)
Be 18 years of age or over"

Barclays need £1m deposited as investment funds.

Any bankers here who want some new business?

The Channel Islands is still part of UK clearing.
Try Standard Chartered.

I used them when I was in the Far East, although banking rules have changed so much since then.
Worth a shot.

Thanks for the suggestion.
SC now require minimum deposit of US$1m.
Also don't provide retail banking services.

I really think he needs to be looking at a japanese bank with a branch here.

However if he needs retail services, does that mean he is resident here?

Ask his Japanese bank to sort it out.

I've been saying that since the start but it's not getting home.

Yes it is. smile
I've suggested that to him.
As to earlier question - No, he's non-res and non-dom.

I've done this in several countries. As mentioned, check if his Japanese bank has a branch in UK, if not, get him to open one in Japan that does have a UK branch that does . The HSBC are the best equipped in my experience (with exception of US) and can allow accounts to be linked in their global view online.. Citybank are also pretty good.

Thanks for the suggestions.

He banks with Bank of Mitsubishi and they have a branch in London, so I've suggested that is the best option.
Of the others :

HSBC require him to be UK resident.

Investec requirements : £300k minimum earnings p.a. and net worth to be £3m.

Transferwise doesn't match his requirements.

If his requirement is simply to have a Sterling account, can his Japanese bank open one for him in Japan?

No requirement to be UK resident, but can use the usual barclays facilities.

Unfortunately, Barclays say no:

"Products and services on this site may not be available in certain jurisdictions. In particular, these products and services are not being offered in Japan or the United States or to US residents."
