Hi there,

Driving along the M1 this evening with the smart motorway signs reading 60mph which I stuck to.

Then one of the signs read 50mph which I reduced my speed down to, just wanted to know if there was a leeway on the smart motorway cameras and how quickly they can start catching people from when the limit changes.

Cheers,

I wondered the same thing when using the M1 yesterday.
Look forward to PH words of wisdom.

I'm sure I've read before that it's something stupid like 10 seconds of leeway

They aren't very sensitive anyway as I normally go through all of them 6-7mph up with no issues when displaying a reduced speed.

Another question, why had no body every nipped up on to the gantries and done the traveling public a favour by unplugging the sodding cameras?

It is worrying that people worry about these cameras. You do all know there are free apps you can have on your phone which tell you which gantries have cameras on......

However, I do not use a mobile phone while I am driving
More fool you.

1 minute I believe.

I've also read that there is a 10 second ish grace period. There has to be otherwise drivers will be unfairly caught.

This is one of the reasons why I think Highways England should be educating road users on how these Smart Motorway cameras work, similar to what they did with the red 'X'. I've seen many people slam their brakes on when they see a drop in speed limit as they're about to pass the gantry - accident waiting to happen.

60s but if you blast through on the assumption that no speed is being monitored during that period I suspect you may be disappointed.

Worst iv seen was on the m62 over to Leeds 4 lanes with '60' above each then the next gantry, lanes 1/2 with '30' above and lanes 3/4 with '50' above. Meaning lanes 1/2 breaking harshly down to 30mph while 3/4 flew past at 50 how can that possibly be safe? Plus was still dark and those ridiculously bright signs are hard to make out the numbers untill rather close. Luckily was early morning so not to much traffic but if was rush hour I'm sure there would have been an accident.

We have them near Luton where I live, they are an absolute menace, mainly because there are so many gantries that you can have different speeds on 4 or 5 within a mile up and down to 50 and 60.

I have been flashed by one and not booked, but I think most of the issues on the bit of M1 they are on are the misuse of the hard shoulder more than anything else.

As, how that ever works out when it is busy enough to use I dot know, as half the time its empty and there is nothing in there and there have been no cars in there broken down etc, so its another genius bit of road management that seems prone to epic failures!

Obviously the only way you could have such access to an app on your phone is by holding it in your hand directly in front of your face the entire time you are driving. Thus you are a terrible danger to all the other road users.

After all, there is no other conceivable way you could use such an app.

Have a look on YouTube for smart motorways, there are a lot of videos on there by Highways England, there may be one to answer your query. wink

Agreed - wouldn't do more than 7mph of a displayed speed. See plenty of people going through at 90+ when no speed displayed though (I don't)

My Commute takes me from J15 to J9 Daily up and down the M1.

I watch the opposite side of the carriageway and the only cameras that 'Flash' are the side mounted yellow cameras.

I have yet to see a gantry mounted camera flash in either direction when the speed restrictions show.

Now, if only someone could develop some kind of device that holds a phone, perhaps with some suction type thingy, or sticky out things that could hold onto the air vents..... Thanks, I am now going to think of how such plastic device could work, and make my millions......
