Evening all.
I'm currently trying to sell my exige S and have my heart set on a 420r.
But I've seen a nice r400 for sale. Are they basically the same car but the 420r is just newer and a kind of upgraded model.
Is the premium you would pay for the 420r worth it..
Hope not too daft a question.
Many thanks.

Although that's sort of true, you got the DS by opting for a R pack when speccing a 420.
In truth there's could be little difference if any between a R400D and a 420R or S. It all depends on how the 400 was specced.
My R400 has most of what's on an R and some of what's on an S. 6 speed, DS, sports suspension, LSD, weather equipment and aeroscreen. Plus some other things that would be options whatever model you chose.
You need to think I about what spec you need and look for that. For instance, the R comes with 15" wheels I think, the S has 14" but 13" are generally reckoned to be best for track days, if not always.
So, decide what you want and look for a 210 Duratec with it. R400 or 420 doesn't matter. Better still a 220 Duratec!

Definitely the 220bhp - ie with roller barrels. It fees like a helluva lot more than the alleged 10bhp increase.
Definitely. But if you can't find one, getting a 210, running it for a while then upgrading may be the best of both worlds, you really appreciate the difference. From my personal experience, I can confidently say they are the same car. The only obvious difference will be the dash. Personally I find the R400 with stack dash and 220hp the perfect spec.
Given the large price difference between the 420 and r400, it's obvious which one offers the best value.
Must have spec (ideal world and track orientated):
- LSD
- Dry sump
- 6 speed
- race suspension
- Zzr tyres
- stack dash
- shift lights
- interchangeable aero
- Tillet seats

Good point about the dash, I'd forgotten about that. My 400 has the EAO switch array but I avoided the Stack after issues with them a few years ago.
I like the self cancelling indicators and LH/RH flashing buttons. I'm not sure what the 420 has, the old switch type?
I fitted a temp sensor to the oil, wired into use the water temp gauge with a switch to flick from one to the other. It all works for me but some do prefer the Stack.
