Say you were deep into a forest park, deserted large open car park, and you let a delighted 2 year old sit in your lap and steer the wheel whilst a car was crawling along (automatic in Drive so just minimal speed).

No one around, nothing to hit, your foot on the brake.

Now say this did happen, but seeing as it is technically public space, a police car came into the car park at that very moment, legally what could you get done for?

Once again, this is hypothetical, and has not happened. Just curious!

Public land or private car park?

If it was truly deserted and under the conditions and speed you talk about, you'd have to get a right **** of a copper to not just ask you to stop, and tell you not to do it again.

Ah...you've edited. Public space.

Assuming you both were using the same seat belt, driving without due care and attention seems the most likely outcome. If plod was a total knob that is.

Shame on you.

The child needs to be in an approved child seat when driving.

Just a few I can think of. But yeah, would be a bit nobbish if a copper decided to do you for it.

This is hypothetical!

And we have a lovely rear child seat, two in fact, as when the new safety recommendations came in for the reverse types, we bought the new one even though it is not retrospective.

Sometime we even have wrap him up in bubble wrap when he pays in the sandpit, just in case...

It is a public place so that would not be a get out. Neither would be a private place, I am sure there is something in a Children's Act. If you have to look it up to verify, then you are borderline I imagine!

Umm...that's not as remote as you suggested/i imagined

I could think of better paces. Although having said that, my old man might have let me steer the car regularly down the country lane to our house when i was a kid.

Still, i repeat - **** of a copper.

Wouldn't the coppers tell you what they were planning to nick you for in this hypothetical situation?

Or might they just take your name and address, and tell you you will get written too?

Would they not issue a verbal NIP or similar?

If the copper is a sufficient knob to feel this is worth doing something about, I expect your list of infractions will be quite comprehensive.

I wouldn't do that - next thing they'll be off on a trip on their own! Our 2.5yr old granddaughter asked the other day to show her how to start the engine.

surely two of those would be charges against the kid, and you would be in the clear? wink
