Hi,
Having searched through the Noble forum i can't find a definitive list of niggles that people had with their 2.5's and 3.0's, so rather than this keep happening again, it would be nice if this became a "reference thread".

Anyone who has owned a 2.5 or 3.0 not 3.0R or M400 please could you post:
a) 2.5 or 3.0
b) miles covered
c) number of times broken down and why
d) minor niggles

Having owned a TVR i personally don't mind if a window stops working and i have to replace a fuse, or you can only open the passenger door from the inside, but when the car leaves you stranded at the side of the road then that's another matter.

Thanks for your participation.

Engine: 2.5
Year: 2001 - 51 plate

Modifications: Exhaust re-mounted to avoid the continuusly breaking welds, Omex ECU, Shift Light, Launch Control, F.P Intercooler, F.P. BoV

Proper Breakdowns: 2
First was due to a hose coming off the radiator.
Second was the failure of the Magnetti Marelli ECU.

Niggles:
Clutch went a bit early (16,000) although the original 2.5 cutches have now been upgraded to AP ones. Had a few cooling issues, soon sorted by factory fan upgrade.

www.lotus-elise.org.uk/noble 2.5l

joust, i've been watching your site for years.... very helpful it is too. I just need a few more accounts like yours.

I'm torn between a 993turbo, Ultima, and M12 as a daily driver you see.

The Noble sits nicely in between the more refined 993 and the balls out power of the Ultima. I looked at both these cars too. The noble put the biggest on my face !

I might suggest looking at a 3R if you need it everyday. The latest creation is usually the most reliable.

993t, particularly in ttx50 guise, is a serious bit of kit. However, I found it just that bit "souless" and "tutonic" for my tastes.

Ultima is, of course, an "old" Lee design but none the worse for what Ted has managed to do with it. I personally don't like the styling at all, and also am not a pure "power" freak, I prefer a combination of styling that I like, handling and power of which the original S1 elise gave me, and then I just "graduated up" to the M12 as it perfectly fitted that requirement.

According to some of our learned friends in the magazine trade, there is no finer handling car than the M12 - and plus you are into a marque with significant volumes compared to the Ultima (and hence sell on is somewhat easier presumably).

Me - I always drive each car I'm looking at and then make a decision, but you won't regret a Noble!

Drove a low spec Ultima last Sunday which i loved. With only 375hp and 265 rears it was quite a gentle car to drive (considering!). Yes it was loud, and you wouldn't want to do speed bumps in it, but my biggest problem was getting in and out.

993TT is wonderful, but doesn't feel "special" like the Ultima. I have a feeling the Noble will fill the gap between the two rather well, so am trying to arrange a test drive for this weekend.

Any recommendations?

P.S. Can't afford a 3R

If its an older one make sure it has had the ECU upgrade. (it shoud have an MBE unit, NOT a Magnetti Marelli one).

Track sump is always nice, all but essential if you want to do a couple of track days.

Factory can probably tell you if the car has been done.

If not its 3k or something hideous as it requires redoing the whole wiring loom. You don't want to go there...

Yep it's something to do with the shape of the plugs. I can't remember though. It is a ton of money for the factory upgrade - like Dan says, circa 3-4k. JNM in chesterfield do an alternative. Thats the way I went, still a couple of Grand though IIRC.

What are you looking to spend? £35-£40k will easily get you into a nice 3R in a private sale. It's worth the extra money with 6 spd box, trackday sump, wheels, faired in lights, etc.

Ask what a Noble dealer would buy a 1-2 year old 3R with 8k miles. There's a big mark up on most of the forecourt prices, like many specialist marques.

A nice 3R for £35K - please show me !!!!
I have a 3.0 - one of the first, Air filters in the "right" place. No "off the road" problems. Minor problems - the common problem with the speed sensor, a failed air temp sensor -£60 to find the fault and replace. Apart from that nothing. just the usual tyres , oil etc. mileage is approaching 18K.
Very happy with it. bought from a non noble dealer.
Alex.
