learning on scrap engines
Discussion
I really wanna tinker with non working engines- don't care if completely dead and regarded as scrap- where do I get stuff like this- if I want a V4 engine say and I go on gumtree or ebay all I will see is working ones or slightly bad ones being sold for hundreds possibly thousands and I don't want to pay this kind of money for a single working engine, I'd only spend that kind of money on a collection of various different engine configurations (cheap and non working ideal). How can I do this please??
preferably motorcycles one cos they're light.. 1000cc bike engine is only about 60kg! .

Just head down your local scrappy & pick up something. If you speak to them nicely they might just give you something for pennies. If you go on Gumtree you might be able to pick up a bike that's a non runner and get it going as a project. Type "project" into ebay, always gets some interesting matches!
May I suggest something different, get a working engine (ebay has a working lawn mower for £30, if you wander around gumtree etc you could get this down) - this way you can tinker away, and then challenge yourself to get it running again afterwards. If you can't, you have lost £30 but gained experience.
Note, make sure you get a 4 stroke engine to play on, not a 2 stroke engine. - unless you are happy with what the differences are.
Also older engines are more likely to have a decent manual that goes with the engine (found online) so you can have something to help you put the massive pile of bolts back together!

If you do get a model, put a little oil in all the bearing places.
Yes, they are plastic models, but you do have to bolt together conrods, get the valve timing right (ish) get the firing order correct, even put piston rings in if I recall. All this is well explained in the book, I finished a straight 4 on Christmas afternoon, and discovered that by July the battery had died enough to confuse it, and would start up at about 3am....
If you are wanting to get into it, yes, go for it!

These models are very good. https://www.micksgarage.com/d/model-engines-and-ca...
I built this V8 one up to show my grandkids how engines work, its very realistic, electric motor, all moving parts, illuminating spark plugs.
Now then, slightly high jacking this thread, what I would love to do is to get hold of a scrap F1 DFV or similar old racing engine.Just to see if I could dismantle and reassemble it. Of course all the ones I have seen for sale online are going for stupid money.
Any one got any suggestions?
