I am trying to set up remote access for a CCTV system, which connects to a webserver that can be accesses over the internet.

I am using a Netgear DG632 ADSL router.

I have a fixed IP address that I have put into the router. I can ping this address from a remote PC. Unfortunately, I cannot seem to get any further!

I should be able to connect to the webserver through the router using a web browser, but if I put the fixed IP address into the address bar of Internet Explorer, it cannot find it.

Should I have put the fixed IP into the webserver instead? If so, what settings do I need to put into the router? Will the fixed IP still be visible over the internet?

I can't get my head around this at all.

Help!!!

The router will most likely have a built-in firewall that will be blocking all inbound traffic.

Dig around in the router config/help for information on port-forwarding. You need to tell it to forward any traffic coming in on port 80 to the web server.
