2003 Audi RS6 Smart buy or stupid?

Hi all its time for me to buy a new car. I currently have a VW Corrado VR6 Storm which i think may well be the best car i will ever have owned but i made a pact to myself to keep refreshing and the worthy adversary is the RS6. Having just turned 21 insurance is now viable and i feel i might be getting too excited. I can afford the car, i can afford the insurance, i can afford to spend a bit on the car but not a HUGE amount. (Corrado got a 2k respray and 1k on a new gearbox and clutch amongst a few little things in the 2 years i have owned it). Question is, is spending 10k on an early RS6 going to be the best or worst decision i make? or somewhere inbetween...

Also i regularly get less than 20mpg so fuel costs isn't a major problem so long as i can get more than 15mpg on average.

Depends how big your wallet/balls are I guess; a 15 year old, highly complex halo car could be the ultimate money pit, especially at the lower end of the price spectrum. That said I bought my old 645 on a similar hunch and it didn't totally ruin me. Welshbeef will be along shortly enough to pass on his ownership wisdom.

ETA if you do do it, make sure to budget for an after-market warranty.

Why, out of interest? I have a new RS6 and love it, but even though - when released - it got great reviews, it's still a 2,000kg car. I really do love it, and it's the longest I've kept a car as a result, but I am also fortunate to have other cars for variety.

Unless you are really into mountain biking or already have a big brood at 21, then I find it a bit of an odd choice. Especially as the older RS6s were somewhat derided from a handling perspective.

I like audis for a kick off, i like to do fair miles going Manchester to London fairly frequently. The RS6 has always been a car i have liked (just because) and i like the all roundness of them. My alternative was a TVR Chimaera. (I'm a bit old fashioned at heart!) Open to suggestions of course but just got a real soft spot for the rs6, worth noting it has to be a saloon not an avant for insurance purposes.

also My budget can stretch to a good one. If i found the "right one" for say 15k i would go for that. numbers were just for illustration.

It certainly is not the best idea you ever had, but it doesn't have to be the worst either.

They are tremendously cool cars, imo.



I bought a very cheap B6 S4 a couple years ago. People on here mostly also told me it was a stupid idea.
Fortunately, to this day I have been lucky

We seem to share similar philosophy of make the mistake yourself.

I feel a lot of the doom and gloom rises on forums about cars but then theres no smoke without fire. But no one goes on a forum to say "my car didn't break today, continue..."

I can see it not surviving the trip home now!!!

Another in the Do It camp here. Every car has the potential to hit you hard in the wallet. All you can do is buy as well as you can,in the Rs6 case its well known that the box/ suspension are the big tickets along with consumables such as brakes/tyres etc. I have bought a series of cars in a similar bracket (Rs4 B5/Rs4B7/S8?Porsche Cayenne Turbo to name a few ! ) without coming to too much harm !
Much maligned the Rs6...probably by those who read about them rather than drive them...

Just buy one that has the suspension converted to coilovers and gearbox has been repaired and you should be golden.

Buy one, but I'd go for one with the coilover conversion or get one at a price that makes you doing the conversion worthwhile as for the gearbox I wouldn't worry I'd wait until it breaks & then have it Nitrogen blasted which will make it stronger & less inclined to crap itself.

Go for it enjoy it & spend the money as the car needs it.

Regarding insurance i was quoted on a saloon £1,400 with elephant.
However the estates im getting quotes for £3,000. And being killed by my car is how id probably wanna go. (Not that i want to but if i had a choice it would in an over powered car)

Will you regret selling the Corrado Storm when they are just becoming sort after classics?

The RS6 has always been an absolute favourite of mine, so I really see the appeal!! Personally I would save up and buy the newer V10...as I never felt the original RS6 was as quick as it should've been

I had one of these when it was nearly new. It was a horrible, unreliable piece of dog poo then. I can't imagine that they'll have improved over the years. I finally called time on ours when, in one year, it was off the road for four months and racked up £20k of warranty claims

Tbh with the corrado im not sure its ever going to reach big money. I may be wrong and may just be being harsh on it but i just dont think its well known enough as i have to explain what it is to everyone or tell them it isnt a scirocco. And maybe the rs6 will ruin me. But i show confidence in cars that are older for some weird reason. Also 2007 rs4 what are they like. Seem alright but they dont quite do it for me like the rs6

The vast majority will be on coil overs apart from potential gearbox issues the biggest concern id have would be holding on to them have you visited RS246
