New Keeper needing to tax car collecting Sunday - Advice
Discussion
HI
I am buying a 2014 astra from a used car supermarket (with a branch in Manchester and one in Cheshire) and they have given me a pick up slot on Sunday. They have MOT'd it on the 10th and he sent me the old log book V5C sections 1 to 8. They have signed section 8 and I will too as new keeper.
They didn't send the new keeper section though so I don't have a 12 digit number so i can't do it online.
I'm not sure if they have changed the owner to me (online) or not.
Can i tax it with the documents I have at the post office and if not (It doesn't say anywhere that i can) then what are they playing at by potentially inconveniencing me like this?
Thanks in advance and heres hoping.

You can tax it on the V5C form you have.
I’m not sure you can, the DVLA site says it needs to be in your name, otherwise you need the new keeper supplement.
OP, the dealer will be able to help you sort the tax out when you go to collect it. I bought recently from a small dealer, he sorted the tax online there and then.
You don't need insurance to tax it.
I don't think you are planning to but just in case, dont tax it with the bits of v5 you have because it will cancel when the ownership is changed. Use the green slip reference number (which to be fair is the same reference as the main v5 but with an extra number at the start so is easily guessed if you do want to crack on and get the car taxed)

Really... you know it's not 1986.
Yes, really. You’re in the trade; you should be aware of the fact that whilst the new owner does not have to have physical evidence of insurance, when he/she taxes it online, the MOT history and evidence of valid insurance details are confirmed before confirmation is given of the car being taxed. As you know, back in 1986 the trade had a lovely little sideline in claiming the tax back on cars they had in stock. Real shame they can’t do that now, eh?

No, it was removed several years ago.http://stayinsured.askmid.com/documents/DVLA_insur...
If you don't have the document number on the V5c just use the 12 digit one that you do have and put any random number in front of it. If you go for continuous direct debit - not the monthly payment ones then it won't take the payment usually until the middle of the month.
Insurance is not required as it assumed the car is insured (continuous insurance) if its not insured then it either needs to be in the trade or SORN.

They're halfwits, who can't read the very simple instructions on the V5C. THEY send the main bit off, YOU get the V5C/2 new keeper. That's the only bits that are needed, and yet people who (presumably) do this day-in-day-out get it arse about face? They didn't send the new keeper section though

No. Without the V5C/2, you need the main V5C in your name - which'll take about a week. You could tax it now using a V62, but that'll cost you £25.But... The 12 digit doc ref for the V5C/2 is the same as the 11 digit one on the main V5C, but with one extra digit at the front. There's no limit to the number of guesses you can have on the online tax site...
