Nearly 30 yrs old so can be a classic.

However, a car that's only done 7000 miles in all that time and with the same one owner. Where the f has it been stored, in the middle of the desert? I know tin worm was rife then but a 7000 miler needing this much...!

Required fitting of new front and rear floor sections, sills, inner and outer wheel arches and a complete glass-out repaint in original Ford red.

It was very obviously rotten for such a low miler. And the price - 18 grand. Jesus!

These late model xr3i's were terrible rot boxes, we had one at
4 years old that had rust coming out from wings front valence door window frames door bottoms etc - it was rusting like an 80's Alfa!

I saw last week a Mini 850 which was bought as a complete basket case for £18,000 (apparently £60,000 finished) and seen a Citroen 2CV sold for £33,000. Nothing surprises me now, not even that the owner of a car similar to one of mine was offered £125,000 more than one can pay for a new one. And he refused!

Ask any classic dealer what's selling and they'll tell you it's anything good that's 80's or 90's..

A whole 132 bhp, Ford's 80's build quality, almost no styling distinguishable from a base model 1.3, what's not to like for for your £40k?

I mean, you could have a Delta Integrale, Porsche 944, Evo, Impreza, any M series BMW over 5 years old, an F355, Noble M12.........Good God, almost anything would be better in any real measurable or emotional sense.

Oddly enough, 4-Star Classics are also flogging a 1986 M635CSi (286hp) for £29k. Bearing in mind it's done 185,000+ miles and will most likely need a new timing chain and tensioner at 200,000 (cost: £3000 or so, and they need replacing every 100,000 miles) it's still attractive compared to the forty-grand Ford.

However, in the world of old cars, there really is no rhyme or reason as to why some cars are more valuable than others.

Back in the last classic car boom of '89-91 or whenever, top notch TR6s were going for £25,000 and thereabouts. That is apparently equivalent to around £57,000 now. "Crazy!" everybody said – it's a crude, cheaply built, rust-prone and unreliable old lump that doesn't handle. And the reality is that £25,000 in modern money still gets you a top notch TR6, so not really a great investment.

Every dog has its day – right now the Fords are having theirs.
