Investing in a Baby...
Discussion
A friend of mine has just had a baby.
I'd like to do something more interesting than simply give them money for the baby's piggy bank... I'd like to put a lump of money into something that would have the potential to offer a nice return for baby's 21st birthday etc...
The "Junior ISA" things look dull... interest rates are low... what other options do I have?
Ideally I'd like to just throw a few hundred in and then leave it "running"... any ideas?

Junior Stocks & Shares ISAs are popular, however the potential returns come with a risk. Maybe ask for your topic to be moved to the finance forum

Have said it before on here, but get yourself over to Portugal in a couple of years and get a good port from their year of birth. Might be worth a fortune when they turn 21 if it was a good year, if not, they and their parents can have a piss up to celebrate and remember you (not 'remember you' as in you'll be dead, just remember you. Although you might be dead, you never know).
You could always turn it into a decent road trip and drive something nice down through France, getting a decent bottle of red for them on the way through too.

A decent single malt......or a cask even..
I haven't been one to purchase for investing before, but my ex wife brought me back a bottle of new Zealand whisky the last time she went home (it was a guilt purchase on her part as she was already shagging someone else).
I found out and although there have been times I wanted to drink it, I have put the bottle carefully to one side for my son, he will have it when he is 21, along with my wedding ring.

Bitcoin.
A few hundred quids' worth could dwindle to zero. It may also pay for a university education by then.
Definitely not advisable for something with a definite near future need but an interesting bet for the far future.
Isn't just one bitcoin about $5,000?A few hundred quids' worth could dwindle to zero. It may also pay for a university education by then.

I like the gold ingot idea!

Bitcoin is a good idea. I recently bought about £250 worth - nothing in the grand scheme of things, but if it really takes off over the next 10-15 years it could be worth a few times more. And if not it's not exactly a massive sum to lose/lose some of the value on.
