My Mother is about to buy a 1600 Zafira 2008 to run around in, I have heard that they are dodgy and nothing but trouble - can anyone enlighten me to whether this is right or not - it is a petrol model

Does it have manual air-con ? If so, it could be a hot topic.

Cheap and not so cheerful motoring. Potential to catch fire, which makes them a little more interesting. Someone I know ran his into the ground and it lived for a surprisingly long time. There are probably better things to buy but if she just needs a cheap run about then why not? I know this is PH but not everyone wants or needs something special.

If your mum wants a decent MPV to scratch around in, the Mazda5 is a good shout it's a similar size & they're reliable.

In the time I've lived here, I've had about 22 cars, my neighbour has had 4 (the 4th arrived this week), they were a Mk2 Clio, a Mk 2 Zafira Petrol and a Pug 207. She cares not for cars, takes them for their annual MOT and that is all the maintenance and attention they get.

The Clio expired at around 6 years old (bought at 3), the Pug was nothing but trouble and lasted about 2.5 years. The Zafira looked like a dented old dog when it arrived and departed, but lasted the longest (longer than the other two combined) and nothing ever went wrong on it (and it didn't catch fire!)

My dad has the same model. He's had it for absolutely ages and it's been astonishingly good. Very reliable (until recently), a very robust interior, nothing's fallen off after several years of abuse from being used for the School Run. He wants to keep it but we've been pestering him to get something a bit more modern/decent and enjoy his pension.

Very boring to drive but I'm guessing that won't bother her?

I guess they are a little boring, catch fire and usually end up as mini cabs but if you like the raised driving position and need to carry 7 people, well 5 and 2 amputees then you should be fine.

Go for the petrol and make sure the heater works.

That is exactly it - a raised driving position without it being a huge car.
